Subject: HardOCP's bottom line on Vista: "It's a Lemon."

Posted by: Nessy

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

From article:

"Based on my personal experiences with Vista over a 30 day period, I found it to be a dangerously unstable operating system, which has caused me to lose data."

"My DVD burner technically worked in 32-bit Vista, but Vista uses a new file system on burned CDs and DVD which prevents them from being used in even Windows XP computers. There's a mode that is supposed to make these discs compatible, but it didn’t work for us. We find this to be a severe limitation, as moving data around on optical discs between different operating systems now becomes virtually impossible."

The article is well written and goes into detail about other issues such as gaming. These guys aren't some smucks, this is HardOCP! Scary!

The few, the proud, the leet.

I've used Vista for a long time. Most of his problems I've never had a problem with. Ad the EDITOR summed up at the end of the article, it was this guys sole experience. I've never had the same problem he's had with CDs and DVDs cross platform. If it messed up, he's done something messed up. His reboots sounded more like hardware overheating than instability of the OS. I, nor anyone else I've known to use Vista, has never had that happen.

If you take note of the bad:

Flip3d - opinion
apple hardware/software - fact, but not MS's problem
Scanner/Printer - not MS's problem. If he's going to upgrade, he should make sure his accessories work beforehand. If not, he shouldn't hold it against the OS.
Preformance - opinion until he preforms benchmarks to back it up. Vista runs faster than XP on my rigs. I've timed it and run benchmarks, so I'm sure.

And the ugly:

Backwards compatibility - It will run games in the emulated environment. That's a fact. If it doesn't, it's the fault of the display drivers.
Optical disk problems - Once again I, no one I know who has Vista, or anyone at the Driver Heaven forums have heard of this problem.
No real need to upgrade - A matter of opinion. If everyone took this guys approach, the world would still be back in Windows 2000. New upgrades are how the industry advances.

I honestly say dont listen to this guy. Yeah, it's his experience and opinion, but Vista is far from a Lemon. It's like going to Newegg.com and not buying an 8800GTX since there was one bad review from a guy who got a DOA.

What it is.

^Agreed. Also, of course there is going to be speculation right now, not every driver is on its feet(especially gfx drivers), and not every program has a update for Vista(for those that need one). I for one haven't experienced and problems that the OS had, rather than problem with drivers. So really, don't bash the OS, start yelling that manufacturers to get their drivers out. If this has anything to do with Halo 2 Vista, then that's too bad, because Hired Gun isn't making the game for XP because it's taking advantage of many Vista-only features like Rapid Install(Tray and Play), as well as Live Anywhere. I think reviews are dumb in the sense that it's more opinion based. That's why you have to try something out first, then make judgments. Don't base your decisions off of someone else's opinion. If you are going to base your decisions, make sure there are enough people(and with a good enough ratio) and facts behind the subject.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Well, Frnksnbns, if I did need Vista to play Halo 2, and that's the only reason I'd buy it, I would find a secondary operating system to rely on if it was that bad like say uh, GNU/Linux :)

Dual-boot between the two to play games and get real work done sounds alright to me?

Windows Vista ... It's not the biggest upgrade in the world, and I think a lot of people that review it, expect it to be a major leap. Well, it's not, but it's definitely nicer than XP. Now sure there's in-compatibility issues here and there, but 95% of the time, that's not Microsoft's fault, is those who write the drivers. Now since it's not the biggest upgrade in the world, is it worth the $140 upgrade price tag? Well, in my opinion no, but that's a whole different discussion. I really don't think you can judge Window's Vista until you try it out for yourself. It's gotten mixed reviews, but that really shouldn't stop anybody from actually going and buying it, unless you're expecting it to be 100% better.

Remember, all OS's suck.

I've never even heard of HardOCP before today, so why should they be any better than any other reviewer?

They're about as reliable as any other PC magazine. They define leet.

Riiight....I still think Vista is perfectly fine, and all that makes or breaks it are the drivers.

No problems so far.. I don't know what all the fuss is about. It's either you get it or you don't. Nobody is forcing you to buy Vista.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Hard OCP has been around a long time and is generally considered an outlet for overclockers/hardware enthusiasts. BTW, I am not anti-Vista in the least, I just wanted to share the article. A few of the issues that were raised in the article were very significant to me and had me concerned. I'm sure 99% of you are too young to think about this, but we are in the midst of tax preparations. A lot of people use Turbo Tax...you simply cannot have an unstable OS while doing your taxes! XP Home/Pro is extremely good at this point. I haven't had a single crash/blue screen/reboot in probably more than 4 years on one of my machines, the other has been problem free on XP Pro for at least 2. I want the same stability with Vista before taking the plunge. But I also realize it isn't all on M$, 3rd party drivers need to be functioning properly too. Upgrading from Win2k to XP was easy, as XP is/was very similar to Win2K (arguably the best M$ OS ever made for gaming). Doesn't look like the same will be true from XP to Vista.

I'm with Zeph on this one.
I've been running Vista for about a month now with no issues whatsoever. No freezes, no BSOD's... the odd piece of software has some compatibility issues, but really, I think for the vast majority of people/hardware setups, Vista is pretty solid. Calling this OS a "lemon" is quite a strong statement. And honestly, there haven't even been any servicepacks or major patches yet.

All my games installed and run perfectly fine.

I have no complaints about Vista. Not one. As with anything, YMMV, but I'm more than satisfied with the experience so far.

I did my taxes so i could get Vista, and i have no regrets. :)

Well all the benchmarks that I have seen have been negative towards Vista- and of course it is physically impossible for MS to have made it perfect on the first try.
All my RL friends who got Vista said its okay- not worth money but they got it on an OEM system. But for Us gamers, who use the net and RELY on every FPS in our games, a wait until SP1 at least is the best bet.

My bottom line: -blam!- you, I hate these articles from compelte -blam!-wits that dont understand what a "Settings" or "Options" tab is. I have used it for over 2months, and LOVE it. So up yours, article writer! ^_^.

Did you even read through to the end? More specifically the editor-in-chief's note?

I'd also like to add than in any given time, I can crash XP Pro SP2 within a minute. No viruses, no modifications, just pushing the OS beyond what little it's capable of doing. I've not been able to do this with Vista. In fact, the only way I've crashed it was messing with certain drivers.

There is no point getting Vista at the moment as it hardly offers anything new over Xp.

Then you aren't using it right. Widgets/sidebar, searching, drive management, and better visuals are just a few.
