This sux, i dont want to have to pay 4 bucks just so i can keep playing a game ive already payed for. Why cant they just add like 2 or three playlists to play the new maps on? this blows, and all the stuff he keeps talking about for Halo 3 sounds like it is extremly small details, like a sniper bullet ricocet sound? honestly i dont give a flying f***, i was really pumped for HAlo 3 but all these crappy updates make me wish i never cared about halo 3
guys the answer is pretty simple, and whoever compared matching to a hard drive used a really good analogy. over time people get settled into their levels and may not move around much (rank or de-rank) and this causes a separation between players in matchmaking because it pairs you with other players of similar ranks. (and a lot of the separation can be caused by the massive # of cheaters f****** your rank up). what bungie is doing is resetting everyone and (hopefully) implementing better cheat/mod prevention tech so that the legit players can be better paired up in matchmaking and to close the gap in matchmaking that is bound to happen over a long period of time (just like the gaps in the memory of a harddrive).
if bungie were to just make the maps available on 2 or 3 playlists, this would completely defeat the purpose of one of the main things (as described in the update) that they are trying to accomplish -- bringing everyone closer in matchmaking and making it more efficient. why? b/c 50,000 other people like yourself may not want to shell out the 4 bucks (give me a break) and this will mean that you will not be able to play with ppl who do have the maps, unless they decided to play on your playlist (obviously anyone with the additional maps would be able to play on the other playlists that didn't require them). if bungie wants to make it more efficient, it has to be all or nothing, and if they lose 1000 players b/c of a measly 4 bucks who cares. think of all the people who will re-subscribe to live just to play halo again with the new maps. besides ppl like yourself have already paid the 50 bucks for live anyways (or you're paying monthly) so if you quit playing, either way its not like you're putting a dent in anything.
furthermore, bungie can't make the maps available on the marketplace because they are courteous enough that they decided to let original xbox owners be able to experience the new maps as well (probably largely due efficiency reasons). xbox owners don't have a marketplace like 360 owners do, but 360 owners can access the in-game downloadable content menu, so that makes it the obvious choice.
oh and as far as the rank reset goes, i disagree with anyone who says something like "cry me a river" or "its just a game". although it is just a game, some people like to play it competitively as a sport and this is where we differ individually. for those people, it sucks, b/c they worked hard to get their ranks up and they care about them, but for the casual players, it doesn't matter as much. so don't dog on people you don't even know; everyone has different likes and dis-likes. on the other hand, if you're whining about the rank reset then like i said yeah it sucks, but you're gonna have to suck it up because the greater good is more important. and like others have said, if you truly are good and simply wait until you get boxes (increases your chances of getting host), you will get back up in no time. from level 1 - 20 you level up extremely fast, 20 - 25 it slows down a little, and after 26 it starts getting harder, but to put it into perspective i am not a superb player but i managed to go from a 26 to a 29 after 2 nights of play for 2-3 hours each.
