This was not very well thought out.
Lots of people that were once loyal fans are going to leave bungie by the wayside.
This will also lead to an increase in cheating.
This plan was not very well thought out, and i was wondering what was the reasoning behind it?
Thanks.

There wasn't any particular reasoning behind it; it was just an unavoidable side effect of the update that's necessary for the new maps, and for the updated Banhammer.

I'm pretty sure they can update the banhammer without resetting the ranks.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

It was well thought out. And it didn't cause lots of people to leave the last time we did it. It also won't lead to an increase in cheating, given the nature of the Auto Update and what it does to both modders and network manipulators.

The primary reason, though, is that with the smaller online population, many people's levels are spread out and/or artificially inflated - to keep matching fast, we need to reign it back in. Besides, you have no idea right now if you rank is earned or not due to the cheating. So, a fresh start with new anti-cheating controls might help lend a bit of help there.

Thanks for the rank reset, I'm really looking forward to it (not sarcasm, it comes off as such a sarcastic statement though lol).

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

So Achronos are you saying that with the new autoupdate the banhammer will be able to detect bridgers as well?

He probably won't say anything untill after the banhammer is updated.

So achronos, since cheating is going to go way down and everything is going to be a fresh start, is there a chance for the leader boards to come back?

Hmm, never even looked at it that way.

If you guys have finally figured out an ample solution to cheating, and can keep this from being a "who can a 50 the fastest" contest, then this doesn't seem so bad.

Still though, this is going to suck for the people who spent time and effort getting their legit symbols/high ranks.

  • 04.06.2007 5:43 PM PDT

Deal with it.

Ah, and the inevitable -blam!-ing of the rank whores begin. Good stuff!

The way Achronos puts it , it seems to yes, be for the better. But, the community will not care. I myself, am saddened.

Im saddddddd:(

do you think we could get back leaderboards i mean they would be "legit now" so i dont see the harm

  • 04.06.2007 5:47 PM PDT

I'm not upset either. I'm really happy about this because if it works a lot of cheaters will be banned and if bungie carrys bans over to halo 3 the less cheaters that will be in halo 3.

Ranks being reset....THANK YOU BUNGIE. This will be the best stuff since I got a new account and got to play as a 1 in btb. I cant WAIT!!!

  • 04.06.2007 6:06 PM PDT

No one likes a smart ass.....especially another smart ass!

Enh! I really don't care if they reset the ranks or not. I don't play Halo for the ranks....I play it for the fun game that it is.

Still though, this is going to suck for the people who spent time and effort getting their legit symbols/high ranks.

But the point is, whoever has the highest legit level (whatever that number may be), and they obtained it by not manipulating their rank up or down (boosting or deranking) or using network manipulation (standby, bridging for host, flooding others, etc.) and were seen by those who they played as a fair and sporting competitor..... that person shouldn't be a 35, or a 42, or whatever. If that person is the highest legit level, then they would be (as the ranks settle in) an even higher rank, as their wins/loss and experience values would be more accurate and realistic.

If those other people (the cheaters, rank manipulators, and network manipulators) are removed from the equation (I'm in the dark as much as you are, I can only hope this will happen), then rankings could be something of slightly more value than they are currently.

Excellent point.

Now this is starting to seem for the better.

Games (by definition) are supposed to be a waste of time. But an enjoyable one. Calculating the value of your time based on a game rank.... well, that's your prerogative. I tend to compare my gaming time against all of the chores and other tasks that it is helping me to avoid.

By my calculations, gaming time is priceless!

DUDE. What algorithm/equation did you use to reach your conclusion? Did it have to do with permutations or combinations? Those are fun!

Grunts are cool...

Ha, to be honest, I'm kind of pleased Bungie levelled the playing field again...although I don't have much of a reason...

  • 04.06.2007 6:38 PM PDT

RIP Halo 2.

This is BS. Now I have to put up with derankers, standbyers, and bridgers again.

I don't care what you guys say about the banhammer - it's not going to be foolproof and I'm still going to spend forever trying to get a freaking match. There's always going to be delevelers and such and this whole thing just blows. I'd normally type up a smart and well backed post, but I'm just angry now.
