I personally am glad the ranks are reset. I'm tired of playing team games in matchmaking with a member of my team either killing them selves repeatedly or by just standing there doing nothing. I believe that most of the time these people are just trying to de-level themselves, unfortunately at the expense of people who truly want to have a good time. Thanks Bungie (Now if i can just get rid of the "Purchase Failed" mesage and get the new maps).

people will still derank after they reset the ranks.

I would have to say the rank reset is a good thing as well as bad. The good thing is that you will see the true players of Halo 2 get there lvls back and I know there will be cheating but bungie has done a awesome job in getting rid of the cheaters. The bad thing is all the levels lost that many people worked hard for but I have to say I can't wait for the changes and get a fresh start I am sick of playing with most people around my level that suck and can't hold there own in matchmaking. So if anyone wants to add me to their friends list and do some owning my gamer tag is eagle eye21. I am always looking for legit players around my level(25 in BTB and 24 in slayer). if you can hold your own add me to my friends list thanks.

You know what would be a good idea? making ranking numbers invisible. There would be absolutely no reason to cheat (even less of a reason than there is now) and matchmaking would function as it is intended. The ranking will play its innate role and, though cheating will not be eliminated entirely, I can guarantee that there will be a drastic reduction in its occurence.

Possible Objections:
"I want to have something to show for my hard work"

Response:
"Shut it"

:)

Personally, I would love it if Halo 3 kept the MM ranks hidden, and gave out an actual military-style rank that once achieved, stayed with the person. So someone who plays just to have fun and is relatively good, could find themselves at a non-comm rank of "Master Sergeant" and they get challenging games playing against other people with similar rank.

If someone gets (legit or not) a rank of (for example) "Colonel", they never lose that, ever. But if you see a Colonel getting matched with Sergeants, that person either manipulated their rank up (boosting) and is now playing at their real level, or they manipulated their rank down (deleveled) and is going to devastate their opponents. If I were a Sergeant and saw that, I would leave the game, let them get the experience and then move on up to play some Lieutenants or higher. That way, I could keep playing with people at my level.

In other words, if they got that and didn't earn it, they deserve to get eaten alive by more skilled players. If they got it and earned it, I should have a way to avoid them and in doing so, move them back towards the level of play that they should be at.

That way, MM does it's thing and no one knows (or cares) that they are a 25 or a 42. If someone is petty (or skilled) enough to get a General rank, fine. Then they have that mark and should only be playing against other Generals. Certainly not against legitimate enlisted ranks.

Meh.

Eh, recon I just can't agree with you there. Halo's ranking system would be too much like Battlefield, or Call of Duty, or whatever. I, personally, love the way it is now. I like having you lose rank, instead of just ranking up constantly, without ever losing the rank. Games like those, just don't have enough "juice" to drink.

I think people would draw away from H3 if ranks were invisible or you had labels. Just me, though.

Yeah that would be great. And the highest rank: Master Chief

What would be even nicer is a complex system of rankings (of course keeping the matchmaking plumbing separate) such as if a person has a large number of snipes/headshots they get labeled a sniper (Bungie can obviously figure a more creative status than that but you get the idea)

Maybe it does sound like a different game, but do you really think it is worse than numbers 1-43 with different colors? (not gonna talk about the symbols, you'd be lying if you said you had one legitimately)

  • 04.17.2007 10:07 PM PDT

wow i worked so hard to get a 40 in snipers and a 40 in slayer do u know how dumb this is now i am just going to quit halo 2 because of this

You know what? When Halo 3 is out, you won't have your level 40 in Sniper or level 40 in Slayer anyways, and that's less than a year away. When Halo 3 is released, are you STILL going to be parading those levels around like some kind of prized possession? If you are, chances are, hardly anyone will really care.

I think reseting ranks with an update is perfect. Levels unlegit like a 50 will have to start at a 1 again. Now that theres no more bridging(people can still standby for host) your more likely to not get cheated and cheaters are more likely to stay closer to their 1 and not their old 50 unlegit. Im also pissed because im gunna loose my 41 in slayer and 36 in snipers, but it shall be a fresh start.

Would be interesting if they based some rank, or matchmaking rank based on playing the single player game.

I always thought it would be slick if I beat the game on a certain level of difficulty, and it would display something cool next to my name, or in my logo or something. Then those that have picked up the game just for the multiplayer wouldn't have those skills, and those that did could boast that they have skills to beat the game. Althought fighting a bunch of NPC's is no where equivilent to a decent capture the flag match, it would show who knows the control scheme and who doesn't.

I'm pissed cuz I just broke 30+ in everything (even swat when it was ranked). Now they are going to reset. O well not gona stop any cheaters. You can still team standby/force host so it wont make to big a difference. And all the legit level 20's-30's will be destroyed by me and my friends. It will be a walk in tha t park and just piss everyone off.

As much as I don't care for ranks now, I'm still a bit upset that ranks are being reset. It took me soooooo long to get a 42 legit when I was a halo whore (haven't played TS since Sep. of '05).

I for one am glad they are resetting the ranks. They have not reset them for awhile now and I know a lot of people who boosted their friends. I don't care if I'm rank 1 or rank 40, it's just a number that in the end means nothing. I play games for fun, not for some rank or leaderboards.

My point is if people want ranks for their ego, for accomplishment, to turn an FPS into a role-player... then give them that. But separate it from the ranking that is used to match people together for challenging games.

By having only one rank and it being visible, it became more important for people's egos, than for the MM system to work. Split them up, let the people who care about their rank go for it (on their visible) and let the system keep putting similarly skilled players together.

If I can see that someone has a visible rank that is higher than mine, I can ask myself, "is this person being matched with me because they suck or because they are looking for an easy game?" and I can choose whether or not to play them. If I quit, I lose some XP they gain some, and are headed back up towards their visible rank.

Eh... Thats actually a pretty well thought out idea. I hope they do that to, except use ranks more meaningful to the Halo universe. Maybe UNSC ranks.

SNOOTCH TO THE NOOTCH!

I'm optimistic about the reset. Everytime I get up around 30 I start getting cheated. I have friends that are legit high 30's that I've beating pretty regularly in custom games, so I know I could be ranked pretty high. Its disheartening to get up to 29 or 30 and then get bridged 8 games in a row, usually by the same people you just reported for cheating, and get dropped to like 26.

i don't care too much about rank, its only a pretty number, symbol next to your name, not worth much, i just wana play the game and have fun, if this floods mm so every one is closer together, the faster games come up, and the better

Thanks Bungie for the 1.5 update for Halo 2 and resetting the ranks.

From my experience I could not get past level 28-30 in THC without a great deal of luck in not getting cheated / getting on the cheaters teams.

Cheaters were slowly killing the community and running off legit players from matchmaking. It was close to impossible for competitive players to find competitive games because the cheaters were constantly doing all they could to destroy the Matchmaking system.

In the past couple of days i've shot up from a 28-35 in THC easily and encountered no cheaters or what was just as common (and just as bad) before 1.5 ..... the 'Legit' bridgers, most of them not realizing that they were giving themselves a huge unfair advantage bridging someone host who never should have gotten it in the first place.

A lot of these bridgers are going to have a huge wake-up call when they try to get their levels back and start getting beat by the same people they remembered 'destroying' .

I hope this is update is successful in eliminating all consistent methods of cheating and that nothing new comes up that is not immediately combated by the banhammer.

Keep up the good work Bungie!
