Just because you believe it doesn't make it true. The fact that your number next to your name is reduced is unfortunate, but it is a minor concern given the big picture.[/quote]
Ranks are primarily a tool for matchmaking - matching players of similar skill level to each other. Lately, that purpose is not being met due to declining populations, cheaters, and a few other things. Even though they've needed it for a while, we've resisted doing the reset for a while for obvious reasons. But this signifcant release of an auto update and new maps provides an appropriate opportunity to make sure matchmaking continues to function.
Here's where i disagree. If these numbers were just meant to help us match up, they would've never been made to look so fancy and so proudly displayed. The different color schemes, designs, difficulty in achieving them, etc. all point to them being trophies for players to show off. These ranks show your patience for Matchmaking, the time and effort you've put into it, and to some degree, your skill level. If they were solely for matching purposes, there'd be no need for all the fanciness and showing them big on your Friends List.
This update is going to lead to an initial burst in cheating. I understand you guys have some new Banhammer that magically fixes cheating, but haven't we been promised this before? Weren't we told before that the new update would stop people from modding and that standby would be a thing of the past? I hate to break it to you, but that wasn't true at all. At higher ranks, you see non-stop standbyers and bridgers out to ruin your game. The only difference was standby was the removal of secondary standby in objective games. Then there's the modding issue. Now modders only have 6 hours to mod. That's still plenty of time for them to ruin the game, after all, they're being provided with trial cards to rank up other people. And then there's the wonderful bridgers. Gotta love people forcing host to some 56K kid, or a standbyer, or some kid who will kick you out of the game.
All this update means is that I'm going to have to deal with cheaters all over again. You can say what you will about this update, but people will keep cheating and the game will continuously be ruined. And now, with less people playing the game, it's going to be significantly more difficult to rank up to where you belong. It's going to mean I'll be cheated at all over again at even lower levels. You can't forget the kids who are going to come into your games and derank so they go and level up their friends.
Face it, the new Banhammer is going to be like the old one where it doesn't stop cheating, only slightly changes the way its done. Although I will give you guys props for the last banhammer update - you guys sure did a fantastic job of locking out the harmless homebrew community - great job! Resetting the ranks is not going to help anything, just make people angry and situations worse.
actually, as far as having visible levels, i think it was needed so people could build parties with equally skilled players if they wanted. if they didnt have a visual level system i wouldn't know who i would like to play with or not.
as far as the rest of your post you can think what you want but im pretty sure that all complaining aside you and everyone else will continue to play halo 2 regardless.
