That's an ideal situation. Like I said, even if they get dealt with faster, it just means a slightly faster consumption of fraud accounts, 2 months, 48 hour trials, etc. Legit players won't notice a difference.

Think back when you coudl mod for months and not get banned. When they "fixed" it so you could only mod for 6 hours, did it make any difference for legit players? Nope, I just got modded running randoms in Slayer on ym second account by a 42 who wasn't modding and his 3 level 1 modders.

then every 2 month and 48hr account will be banned that much faster and that many less people will have to play against them. yeah some people will still get stuck with them but hopefully not near as many.

RIP Halo 2.

Like I said, when they changed the amount of time you had to mod down to 6 hours, it didn't make any difference for the end user. The 48 hours and 2 months will run out, oh say, somewhere around the release of Halo 3 when it won't even matter any more.

The good players will continually make a mockery of the bad ones [which they will whine about] while the good ones have to sit through lots of boring games where there is no competition to get back to where the were and again, not be able to find games.

If this was true we would simply have two levels. And they would be labeled "Good" and "Bad".

Anybody who still doesn't like the level reset: please reread Bungie's explanation. They are just trying to help you continue to play the game you love whenever you want, and in any playlist remaining.

i totally see what you're saying and i understand your point. but what im saying is that bungie is probably thinking about the whole online community not just the individual players. the quicker they get banned the less people they can cheat against overall. like i said i'd be happy if they kept the ranks but im fine with the reset too. i guess we'll see how it goes.

They aren't helping anything, they're making a misguided decision that looks good from their ivory tower perspective.

they made a great game, they just don't understand how it should be played.

I totally agree with the reset. The population has completely changed since the last reset, and the ranks are a mess. It's not even directly from the cheating itself, those distorted ranks radiate across the board and end up messing the whole system up.

  • 04.06.2007 11:50 PM PDT

RIP Halo 2.

So what's to stop it from happening again? We'll just see hideously unfair, poorly matched, cheating-ridden games for the first month or so and then everything will settle to the way they are now.

  • 04.06.2007 11:51 PM PDT

You all should seriously stop complaining...

Fact its a game, it shouldn't be important or meaningful enough for you to whine because a number next to your name is getting reset.

I have to put up with crap day in and day out at work, school and other stuff, but I don't whine about it.

Get over it...

Bungie I am glad you are doing this and honestly wish it had been done sooner.

Cheaters and the other trash on Halo 2 should have a message sent to them.

I think its rather funny. Heck tonight I ran across a standbyer in TS and just laughed, because he is standbying for what? His rank will soon be reset, lol.

  • 04.06.2007 11:52 PM PDT

RIP Halo 2.

And he'll just standby for it again while you'll be forced to toil over again and spend a lot of time and effort just to get back to what you deserve.

Well I'm thinking the smaller population and age of the game will make that process much slower, and with any luck some of these anti-cheating measures will work.

  • 04.06.2007 11:56 PM PDT

RIP Halo 2.

That's some wishful thinking.

An update to the Banhammer and leaving the ranks the way they are seems to make the most sense here.

alright yea the rank reset may b4 the new maps and such but really there is no need think about all the level 18's out there now and the 40's (legit) out there that are all gonna be level 1 there are so many legit 40's and people who just destroy that the kids who cant get that high and are unskilled arent going to have any fun because of all the really good kids just passing through and yea they stop modders with whatever but they really cant stop a standbyer can they? just leave the ranks alone i fought tooth and nail to get to my 40 and now im a 1 again? nah im done with mm ill take my level one into all the customs i can now bungie u officially suck hard

I might actually have a reason to play ranked MM again.

I just hope that this new update can, and will ban cheaters of all types. I mean, what better way to test out new anti-cheating software than on a game that is currently being cheated in. This software could very well be the prototype for anti-cheating measures in Halo 3.

Plus, I can finally play MM with my friends who are still in the single digits. (They don't suck, they just don't play much ranked MM) I am a bit saddened that my level, that I've had for over a year now, will be gone but if new cheating measures are in place then it shouldn't be too hard to get it back, hopefully.

As a last word I just like to say that I laugh at all of you that wasted so much time on something so worthless. Bungie already stated over and over again that they could reset the ranks at any time and, well, now's that time.

Bwa, ha, ha, ha!!!

I love you for saying that!
Ya and the whole this will even stuff out crap is the most BS I've heard all week. I mean hello there are actually people who are level 1's and such and you bringing everyone back to a level one isn't going to help those who are new to the game or those who just aren't that good at the game yet. Don't get me wrong i have no problem with the rank reset but i do have a problem with how people are going to be getting paired up with level 40's when there a 20 or something.

It does'nt really matter because once halo 3 comes out the new mm system is going to come into play, unless you're still stuck with halo2, ahaha.

* I love it how all the people who say ranks are gonna be easy to get back or that they don't mind are all below level 5. Pretty funny that you're going to get your 20 back. GG

Wow, because I've said that statement since they announced they were resetting the stats, and I'm a level 31. Guess what? I don't mind at all! If they reset stats more often, I'd spend less money on multiple XBL GT's. I'm glad that they are resetting ranks. I've gotten up to a 31 on 3 GT's and I don't find it hard at all. I don't play with a team, I go in with complete randoms, every time! If you say that you can't get back to the rank you had before, even with using a team of friends, you DON'T deserve to be that rank. Sorry to break that to you.

Stop making yourself look bad by posting ridiculous generalizations like this.

And it didn't cause lots of people to leave the last time we did it......
Oh really?...with the smaller online population, many people's levels are spread out and/or artificially inflatedIf it didn't cause people to leave, why is there now a 'smaller population'? you have no idea right now if you rank is earned or not due to the cheatingYou're telling me I don't know if I cheated or not? I'm pretty sure I would know that.

Obviously this is being done because the last banhammer update wasn't all that effective. This time, please release some statistics to show the Halo community what is actually being done. Personally, I'd like to see weekly numbers somehow showing the total number of bans issued by type/length of ban. This would give some reassurance to us, the Halo community, that this update is actually effective. Please give us something more than just you saying so.

I don't really care either if they reset the ranks, I mean my highest level is only 26 and it shouldn't take that long to get to a 20 or above (when I say not long probably 2 months) but besides when Halo 3 comes round the corner the ranks will count for 'scheiBe alle' as no one who has Halo 3 will go back to the Halo 2 multiplayer. I knew this even when I got Xbox Live last October and so the only ranks I was too concerned about were Team Slayer and Team Sniper, but that's going to count for nothing, ah well thats life. Besides I wouldn't want to be a level 45 or something high above because alough they may be kick ass Halo players, a lot of them if not most or all of them will also probably have no social life and play Halo to the early hours of the morning, obsessed, no. Possessed.

Listen, you were never suposed to WORK for your rank. gaming is exact opposite of work, it is fun. MLG, rank whores, and cheaters of any kind are no longer enjoying video games, they just want to be the best. Well guess what, it means nothing. Playing MLG customs, constantly going into TS, and hitting that standby button won't improve your life, but gaming for fun can. I'm currently a 27, I play with friends mostly and go into matchmaking on occasion, but when I get people cursing out and threatening to "get there friend in Bungie to ban you for sucking", you realize not enough people play for fun. hopefully this will remove that part of the Halo 2 gamers.

Terrible idea. Your trying to make the argument that the reset is for declining population and cheaters. First of all the new maps will be bringing back a lot of Halo 1 Multiplayer fanboys that will want to play the new hang em high. Two you have a consistent 50,000 + players daily which is more than a majority of online console games. Third if your telling us its because of cheaters, do so. Make it clear that this updated banhammer will take care of them. Even if it does I think we all know cheaters will still be around. Remember the patch that was supposed to stop stand-by?
