Subject: H2V custom map editor

I am wondering if anyone knows what file types the map editor will be compatible with as far as textures and 3d models go. I am new to the custom map world but not at all new to 3d modeling and animating. So I am wondering which program to start modeling a map design I have created; Maya or Lightwave are the two main programs I am wondering about and it just makes me curious since Maya does not accept lightwave files, and I think H2 was made in Maya? Anyway if anyone knows this will help me out to get the map done faster ... thanks!!!

GS: How powerful is the level editor in the game? How large a map can you make with it? For instance, could you create a gigantic battlefield that's on par with something like the Battlefield games?

DM, MVG, and KW: The level editor is powerful, as it is an adapted version of the internal tools we use to make the games. We don't place any restrictions on the scale of the map you can create. However, with the auto custom map downloading from the lobby, we expect the more popular custom maps will be small on disc to facilitate fast distribution. Also, the most popular Halo 2 multiplayer maps tend to be smallish.

GS: Mods are very popular with PC multiplayer games. How mod-friendly is the Vista version of Halo 2? Will you support the mod-making community with other tools?

DM, MVG, and KW: The level editor will allow users to create new geometry and textures and create playable multiplayer map types for the game. The format is not completely open, but it's still very powerful.

This is from the Gamespot Interview with Hired Gun about the new map DIstrict. Hopefully it answers your questions.

I'm about 99.256817% sure that most of h2 was made using 3dsmax. Only animations and maybe some highpoly stuff for bump maps might have been made with maya. 3dsmax is definitely going to be supported and I would be surprised if maya isn't as well this time around, however lightwave is iffy. The textures are compiled into an engine specific format from probably either a tiff or a tga so if you have photoshop or GIMP you should be fine.

So if you want to be 100% sure that your models will be accepted do them in 3dsmax, Maya is a probably, not a certainty.

Going there you can hit the ground running on release.

As far as we know, 3D Studio Max and probably Maya will be supported. Any 2D art program that can save to a certain, most likely TIF, file format will be supported. Where people in the CE community had to write their own exporters for apps like Maya, before, H2V will be more friendly and somehow make writing exporters for programs of choice more friendly. Halo 2 was made with a mixture of Max and Maya.

I read it doesn't include a modeling program, and 3ds max is like $1000 or something, so I would point him in the direction of gmax.
