Subject: Grammar Police?

I think there should be a new form of grammar enforcement: the Grammar Police. Their only power would be to edit posts and make them understandable. I realise there's probably a million flaws with this and that a lot of people won't like it because it violates their right to "free speech". It's not as if the person's idea will be changed; it will just be in a more legible and reader friendly form. I hate trying to read walls of text and all sorts of horribly typed ideas. Some of them are quite good if you can get past the horrendous grammar and spelling.

I know there's a spellcheck, which I just used, but people seem to ignore it. Also, having a Grammar Police may increase the amount of people who type badly just because they know it will be corrected and will not have to correct it themselves. It's not as if a Grammar Cop will have to change every post; they will only change posts at their own discretion. Some are typed in a certain style and manner purposefully.

The more I think about it, the dumber it sounds to me, but I just thought I'd get your opinions.

What do you think of having a Grammar Police on B.net?

If there are any questions, I'll try my best to answer them to your satisfaction. I will then edit the question and answer into this post for future reference.

See, that's the main problem right there.

People can't be trusted with any measure of power, even if they were trustworthy members, they wouldn't want the responsibility of messing someones post up. Everytime I make a mistake I get pulled up on it, howled down on it, the fact that I have a fairly coveted (for some stupid reason) position means I can shrug it off and still have some authority, for people still widely considered members, the liability would alienate them from the rest of the community.

My only question is: where the hell is this spell check I keep hearing about on here!? I haven't seen one on here at all. I feel so left out : (

Anyway, going on-topic now. I do not like this idea. There is no real problem with text, spelling, and grammar issues on this site. If you can read it, it is perfectly fine. There should be no reason to fix something when it isn't broken. Sure, it is annoying, and some may call it broken; but how exactly bad is it? I haven't seen one horrible post in well over a month. And I am on here for at least five hours a day. I, personally, think that people are blowing it out of proportion. The grammar and spelling is fine. As long as you can make sense of the text, it is perfectly fine, as said above. To me, there is no reason for this idea, unless of course people start spelling like this 24/7 on this site:

hl0 w4z u|P? U|2 s+uPiD. 5uK i7 n00B!

Then we would have a problem. But when posts don't even get that bad, it is perfectly fine. However, if someone starts posting in pure "leet speak" then I would completely agree with this idea, probably. There would be doubt, but I would be more for it than as I am now.

You can get spell checking for textboxes in FF, don't know about IE. But seriously, to newcomers, do the world a favour and type your damn words.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Let people talk how they want. You should be able to understand MOST things.

I can only recall a few times where I couldn't understand a post at all.

if i talk like dis u can still understand rite??

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

The method of communication in a forum is the written word. If your grammar/spelling is so poor you can't get your message across, well, that's its own grammar police, isn't it?

Furthermore, how you present your point of view is often as important as what your ideas are. If you can't relay said ideas because you can't be bother to use periods, for example, then that also represents a from of grammar police.

Those happen naturally. A human correctly people for grammar is thus redundant and probably stupid, given that the above too methods are far better at stopping bad grammar. Besides, if the reader can understand enough to correct the grammar without losing the intended meaning... well, then what's the difference other than the policeman being seen as stuck up prick?

There's one thing that bugged me. When people use numbers to replace letters so that they can have swear words shown in their posts. Example: F@g.

I just wanted to set that trap off before some other user fell into it. :]

Thanks for the moment of self-sacrifice. I was almost certain he did it intentionally, but I couldn't help thinking "WTF? Isn't that a self-emulation of his previous point?" :D

I'm a bit hypocritical on the issue, myself, though. I'm perfectly capable of typing out grammatically correct, spelling-error-free posts (and certainly cringe at those magnificently terrible posts we've all encountered at some point, even though I can usually decipher them [I'm just a tad compulsive O_o]), but I rarely preview my posts, or utilise fully proper punctuation. I'm a slow typist, so I save most of the official stuff for something more formal than the usual colloquial discussions on-going in other forums.

I had a more solid point to make, but I was distracted. :(

That kind of "class" or "rank" would be really difficult. First off, the grammar police would have to click throughout every single post correcting grammar errors. The job is too hard for any handful of people to do. Lastly, what about the Edit feature. Always helpful to me if I need to change my grammar. Anyone who isn't smart enough to use it is well, how do I put this nicely.....idiotic.

I don't like the idea of grammar police. Some of the funnier things have been when people spell so poorly it gives their post an entirely different meaning. I still laugh whenever I see someone using 'i am dumd'.

I wonder if it's a bad thing that horrendous grammar is entertaining to me.

i use IE7 as well. it doesn't suck. Full Screen mode rocks. and it's fast with good connection. real fast. tabs rule. ur just being dumb.

back on topic, it would suck to have Grammar Police. Spell Check is good enough for me. Grammar is pretty subjective. or is it objective? i always get them switched... :-)

Well, I can understand not spelling words correctly in a chat room or IRC, but on a forum you aren't restrained with time, you can sit there and type out a message in proper English. If you aren't going to take your time and write out your message, then I'm not going to read it.

P.S. Achronos is 100% right.
