This illustrates what I'm talking about (Sort of):

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

While that is pretty difficult to read, most people are surprised at how easy it is to read considering the fact that every single word (besides pronouns and conjunctions) is misspelled. Interesting, huh?

3) Reputations here are based in large part on the way one presents his or her ideas. If every post was presented in a uniform manner, it would detract from users' individuality. Additionally, an "editor" or "grammar policeman" might misconstrue or misrepresent an idea unintentionally when editing and end up destroying the original poster's thought.

So let me get this straight...you're saying that if everyone used proper grammar, users' individuality would suffer?

Who knew proper grammar was such a detriment to uniqueness?
you didn't get him straight.

when you correct someone else, especially someone with exceedingly poor grammar and spelling skills, you risk denying his individuality not because you made the post legible, but because it's legible through YOUR mind. everyone has a different writing/typing style, so when these grammar police would be out correcting errors, the most dreadful, unreadable posts would be reworked to be made legible---and in doing so, according to Foman, destroy the original posters intent, or at the very least, make the original poster sound like a clone of someone else.

In other words, in your haste to make a snappy and sarcastic post, you missed his point and emulated the fallacy of having others police the threads for unbearable posts. If you can't understand what Fo meant when he typed it out clear as day, how could we expect anyone else to accurately represent the illegible illiterates?

While the worry of an editor misunderstanding the intent of the post he/she is editing is a very real concern, I'm not convinced that anyone who needs their post edited should be afforded any such individuality.

Oh by the by...you sound an awful lot like Foman...are you guys perchance members of the same humorless cult?
agh, i tried replying yesterday but my comp took a crap on me.

Firstly: I commend you. too many people would have been offended by the way I worded my post, glad you didn't.

Secondly, I agree with your point, barring the usual "I spekeses a forrin langwedj" excuse.

Thirdly, I've seen only a few posts by Foman, and am unaware of this humourless group. :D As for my defense of Foman, it was mostly to clarify his point, not necessarily a full agreement.

I actually have a broad sense of humour, unfortunately, idiots sour it. But if someone's got a group like that, I'll sign up in a heartbeat, baby. ;)

I still can't believe you guys are seriously trying to argue this point. Forums consist of text typed by imperfect people on the fly: Much like email, chat etc. Even if a correction is "correct", it will just get irritating after a while and the corrected party will just quit talking. think of all the grammatical errors in our spoken language... Don't you hate it when people constantly correct your speaking grammar? ("You and I" not "Me and you", "Especially" not "Expecially", etc, etc, etc)

The problem isn't that some people can't type/spell. The problem is that you expect too much from a public forum on the internet.

err, he stated the point, you're arguing it. and anyways, that statement by itself is not an indication of his position, but merely an opinion on the practice were it to be implemented.

Splitting hairs. His statement did implicitly indicate a position: That he's "not convinced that anyone who needs their post edited should be afforded any such individuality.". Just because it's not explicit doesn't mean it's not stated. Dammit, now I'm arguing about arguing. That when I know it's time for me to stop talking and making a fool of myself... :)

"Only in grammar can you be more than perfect."
The harder you work to achieve perfection, the further away it gets.
Perfection is a near impossible concept outside of theoretical parameters.

I've watched this thread since I created it, and I honestly don't think any of you understand what I mean when I say "Grammar Police". When I say that I just mean a "reformatter" for lack of better verbiage. I don't expect someone to rummage through every person's post and edit every single grammar mistake. I mean that the "grammar police" would just make it more reader friendly.

yes, but if I hadn't been here to toy with your mind, your day would have been boring, like sanity. aren't you happier now?

edit: ffs, i was trying to quote analogweapon, but the quote didn't show. oh, well, sorta fits as a reply to phoenix, too, i guess.

How about we stay on topic with this thread instead of discussing the theories of perfection, debating and philosophy of the issue?

Not only is it blatanty an attempt to instill some false sense of intelligence, it is also off topic. So stay on topic; grammar police good or bad?

I'm done with this thread. In parting I respond to Pezza:

Was somebody offended or agitated by our conversation? Possibly. Sorry about that. And I have to say that I support any attempts to instill intelligence (Either from me or to me), and I don't see anything wrong with it. You're opinion that we deal in "false" intelligence is merely your opinion and I take it as an insult, just so you know.

Grammar police: bad.
