The last man on Earth sat in a room, there came a knock at the door.

...and I blame Steve.

First let me say upfront, I'm sorry if this has been posted before, it's been a while since I've been to The Forum Formerly Known as The Septagon.

I've noticed a trend in the forums (mostly the Flood) that has become a bit of an annoyance, to me at least. I'm talking about "signing your posts." I can't go into a single thread without seeing the posters initials, *hugs*,*krys*, *nibbles on kitten*, *eats lego* or some other form of useless crap to make sure their post sticks out. This has even started to move into subject line of threads. I understand the need to be unique, but that's why we have our user names, avatars, and signitures.

I know I'm probably overreacting, but i wanted to know how other people felt about this.

I agree completly, that is what a sig is for. It is even slightly spam if you think about it. If what you write on a post is important or should be heard then there is no need for that waste of space, and since everyones post is important those things should not be written down. It annoys me greatly, and what is the point of signing your posts anyway? I thought that is what a username is for.

Edit: Oh and btw, when I wrote this I forgot about Steve. What he does is way different as it always has a different form of input to it. Some of his 3rd-persons can be quite usefull.

Well, is it that much of a problem? Surely if the "signatures" only take up a line or so, you can ignore them.

Is there some group somewhere that thinks it is funny to think of any little annoyance in the Flood and come post it in the Septagon?

There have been too many of these threads in too short a time for it to be coincidence. There has even been a thread exactly like this in here not long ago, regarding exactly this non-issue.

Leave the Flood alone; it's an off-topic forum, silly little signatures like that have been around for ages - why is it such a problem now? Get over yourself, and move on.

why is it that the ones who most push for everyone to adopt an attitude of indifference are the ones who sound the most bitter?

the Flood may be an off-topic, have-fun forum, but I don't believe its intent was to be all-around moronic. In fact, it's supposed to be more of a Miscellaneous forum than a spam forum. Every other forum here has a specific function in direct relation to Bungie and its products, warranting (mostly) semi-mature discussion. It would follow, then, that the Flood is for topics that do not involve Bungie, or at least any of its topics already set aside for other forums, but must still warrant something worth discussing.

I agree with others that it has devolved into a poo-flinging, frippery-laden, nuthouse. Before anyone even thinks of angering me with idiot, -blam!- remarks like "oh, no, there's nothing we's can do about it, so just drop it already pls" comments, i'd like to state an idea so laden with dictatorial ideals that commies would seem relaxed and free-spirited. Punish idiots relentlessly until they give up posting here, or die in despair at their failed efforts to annoy us. I'm naturally prone to loathing, but i don't think it's much to ask that mods weild the ban hammer like tartarus with his fist of rukt. violence solves everything.

rant aside ( :D ), i do feel the hugs, krys, kiss feel-good hippie crap is a bit much for my obsessive-compulsive literary-driven orbs to take, but i don't see it as a problem, outside the fact that it is, of course, utterly retarded. i feel it's mostly harmless, if creepy, so i doubt anyone would care to even devise a solution to enforcing its cessation, if that made any sense.

erm, so, yeah. O_o

Edit: also, if this forum's about the community, and its improvement as a whole, i'm guessing these topics were posted here under the implication that social issues fall under that category.

I should also state that my very first comment in this post wasn't meant as an out-right insult, Saint. it's just an observation from many such replies in other threads. I also understand your POV: it is a bit irritating to see the same complaints made over and over, but i do not feel that it is useful to complain about a complaint until it's found that no viable resolution exists and repeat topics creep up regardless.

not sure if my post came across crystal clear. not exactly world's greatest communicator.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I like the way Steve does it. As recon said, the third person closing is a valid part of his post that still has information relevant to the topic. But, I do agree that we should do *something* about those little tags that are there in lieu of sigs.

I whole-heartedly agree with Recon.

Most of the time they're quirky and, now and again, relatively amusing.

Actually you could probably thank Delta Archer and his arrows for starting the jist of it. People hated him for the absolute fact that he just put a *shoots arrow* tag in his posts. It is annoying, but you can ignore them. Sometimes it just proves what type of content that user is capable of posting.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

It is kind of annoying but I don't really mind when people do it... It's harmless, really.

Here here!! I completely agree. These "Sign offs", if you will, have been around since late 2005. Why all of a sudden are they such a large problem? If you don't like them, don't read them. It is simple, it is odd how all of a sudden everyone is taking the forums so seriously. It is the internet people, it is filled with stupidity and intelligence, just because you favor one group does not mean the other cannot exist on it's own. The flood is the way it is, quite frankly, if you don't like, simply don't go there.

It does get on my nerves, because i know they're simply trying to copy flood "celebrities" such as delta archer, who've they've seen to be well known, mostly due to their use of it. Its mostly just newer members craving the attention those members have, but its harmless and easy enough to ignore.

It really doesn't bug me. It's a way of expressing ones individuality which, on this particular forum, seems to be frowned upon. We don't get custom avatars, sigs are pretty much pointless now, so what is left? I kinda like it. It lets me remember who is posting and establishes their pattern. there really is no other way that members are allowed to stand out. There is a difference between showing individuality and being an attention whore, though. Many members use a sig of some sort. Think About Great_Pretender, or as he is more comonly known, and is posted at the end of all of his posts, -TGP-. He's a mod. He doesn't really need attention, but he posts that anyway because it's who he is.

Recon, I would have to disagree that both are harmless.

What Steve does is just Steve. I think all moderators should have some trademark personality, as opposed to being mindless drones.

Now onto the topic of mindless drones, it's become a habit (and a very annoying one at that) to put some "*verbs*" at the end of posts. That isn't a signature. That's some people following a trend. A particular member has started the *eats lego* one, which I believe takes away highly from his posts. It's a large interruption when I'm reading through a thread. I suppose it more or less depends on every member's viewpoint on such things, and how much of an annoyance it really is, but when I see a thread that contains some great responses, and then some little one saying

Yeah. I agree.

*eats lego*

it strikes me as coming from a small child, or a more mature person acting stupid just to garner attention. Of course, this may be completely personal, but I think it's intensely obnoxious.. :\

*eats lego* is not the same as -C.B- or "--Cheers"

I don't blame you :P. Yours is yours, it is probably the only individual one, the others are all trying to imitate you to try and attain the same individual status your sign off has, and just achieving annoyance and imaturity due to their generally stupid nature and copycatness.

So, if I gather correctly, it's OK to have all that at the bottom of your post, despite how annoying it is? Hmm.

Imitating someone else's personality doesn't add personality, it just ruins the old one.

Yes, this is something I can agree with. It really becomes impersonal and pretty soon it will be an army of droid look a likes. I remember a particular member when he was new started with *eats Kitten* but was shot down because it wasn't original (a good thing) but he then basically turned the thread into "Choose an awesome trademark for me*. To me it isn't the little endnote action that should be reconized, it should be the user for his actual involvement. It really starts to make some areas of the forums a popularity contest. "Oh he says *eats fan* at the end of his post, he must have said something important" If the post actual has substence and inforamtion, it shouldn't need that extra little "look at me I'm awesome".
