i suspect that my response to learning that the ranks would be reset was similar to yours: shock and frustration. i do not mind my ranks much, and they move up and down depending on the quality of the teammates that i choose, but i thought that restarting the ranks would make it harder to find good matches.

now that i have thought about it, i am not afraid that it will be tough to find balanced competition. all of will start from a low rank, and instead of racing up against inferior competition, many of us will find other good players in matches at low ranks. we will all be able to level up naturally, and, if what bungie states is true, we will not bump into as many cheaters along the way. so, the worst that will happen is that we may level up more slowly since we will face higher odds of being matched against superior players. but, this is hardly a problem, it just means that we may lose more fair games than we would otherwise. but, at the same time, we may win more fair games than we would otherwise.

plus, since all of the mm players will be starting from level 1, at least for a while, it should be much easier to find matches since the player population will be spread across fewer ranks. there will be ten tons of players within an acceptable range of ranks, so, no matter how quickly a person races up, they should still be able to find challenging matches. and the faster a player moves up, the more likely he will be to match similarly skilled players (since few will be able to level up that quickly). so, even while we are at lower ranks, we will still have a decent shot of having balanced matches.

i have left out quite a lot of details about how ranks being reset will affect us, and i am being unusually optimistic, but i think and hope that the ranks being reset will not be much of a bother. i only want to play balanced and competitive matches, and the rank reset should only interupt that slightly in the short run, and, if things work as planned, then in the long run we will all be able to play at our natural ranks and do so without having as many matches ruined by cheaters.

what do you guys think?

Really nice, well thought out thread, bud.

I completely agree. I will be so hyped to have a clean sheet and start completely over. There isn't going to be as much cheating? Fine with me. The one bad thing I think you forgot to mention is that since you start over at level 1 you can be matched up with anyone. Your teammates could have been a level 14 Legit or someone who was really good and a high level legit before the stats reset. Once you level higher I don't think you will run into that problem as much, but I think starting out will be a bit difficult no matter how high you were before the stats reset.

you are right to point out that this is a negative consequence of resetting ranks, but, as i have mentioned (maybe elsewhere), this is only a short term problem, and it is one that will pale in comparison to the long term gains of providing ranks that are more indicative of skill and the ability to effectively redistribute the enitre mm population.

by getting rid of cheaters and resetting ranks mm will run more smoothly and we will all have more fairness and competitive balance in more matches. the number of matches that are less fun because of disparate skill of players will be far lower than the number of matches that will be more heated and balanced.

Don't worry supersquid, people are just pissed because it took hours and hours of standbying (without getting caught) to get thier rank up. Anyone who legitimately earned thier rank shouldnt be too worried about getting it back.

Edit: speling are dum

I'm not sold on the fact that there won't be any more cheaters. Even if they do update the "Banhammer" to make more cheaters recieve a ban, people can still make two month accounts and cheat for a good ten hours or so.

I think its cool the ranks are reseting!!! Its going to be fun to get my ranks back up... But im not going to play ranked matches at the begining because of the 37-50's that are trying to get there ranks back up and it wouldnt be fun unless I have my bro's playing with me... I feel sorry for all the legit 25's that are going to play matchmaking and get owned lik no other... lol but its going to be fun and actually a challenge

Congratulations! You found where the signatures are hidden!!

1. From remembering the last stat resets, it wasn't really a big deal. I don't remember having many issues of being completely outclassed by people (if you didn't know, I'm not exactly in the top tier of gamers).

2. The odds of you getting matched against a bunch of "40"s or other high rankers who are better than you, isn't that high. Unless you go up against a partied up, team of players who are good. Meaning, if you, and most of the people in MM are going in as individuals, then you'll probably both have a mix of good and players on YOUR team, AND have a mix of good and bad players on the OTHER team. The odds of randomly having one team of awesome players versus crappy players is actually pretty low (again, unless they are a party who teamed up to go into MM).

I have a solution to your problems about not getting to your natural rank fast enough. After the reset, dont play Halo for about 2 weeks. This will give enough time to seperate the total nubs and the decently skilled players. Now, sign on and join a party with a couple friends that you think are of even rank as you (by now they must be in the 20's. You will be a one and as you pwn the mid 20's people you will go from 1 to 20 in about 32 games. If you wait 4 weeks and then play with friend that have worked to the upper 20's it will be even faster. My guess is that after the reset and without cheating there will be only 5-10% of the MM population above rank 35. Without mods there are so many variables that can allow a good upper 20's low 30's group to compete against slightly higher ranks (things like gametypoe, weapons, spawn cycles, and of course luck).

THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!

So that guy whos a level 40 in everything and is legit was only crying and cutting himself because he's... ..joking? OK. Ima tell him and all the legit people who worked their asses off for their rank aren't mad. They are liars.

Sorry, did you say something? I was busy being AWESOME!

I'm glad the ranks are being reset because I'm mostly a custom player, not very competitive.

this seems right. depending upon where our level of skill places us in the halo mm population, we will have a mix of games. sometimes we will be much better than our foes, sometimes our foes will be better, and sometimes all players will be similarly skilled. this will only be the case for a short while (until we start to level up more by playing enough games), and then the problem will be gone.

The real problem is that it won't do anything. So i get back to level 25 after the reset? What did i gain? Nothing. All that happened, is that cheaters who were banned, are level 1s. Wow. Who cares if cheaters are level 1s.... its not like it matters. As long as they can't enter MM, it doesn't really matter. Seriously, i don't see any gain. Maybe my rank will slightly go up. Thats not really a gain, and it would go up anyways, as the cheaters can no longer play.

Really, what am i gaining? Nothing,

If there are no cheaters, its not like people will have lower ranks. Because, to maintain a level 15, you need to win about 35% of your games. Without getting cheated, its kind of hard to not win 35% of the games you play. So its not that like the whole, easiness to find a match thing will actually work. People will go up higher, so there will be less lower leveled players. Before the first reset, i heard that a 20 was like a 35 is now. So after this rest, a 20 will become a 25 or so, a 25 will become a 30, or something like that. We're not going to condense the levels, there are plenty of players playing MM. Its not that difficult to find a game.

no, this is literally all wrong. you do have something to gain, and so do the rest of us (excluding cheaters and boosters). when we start over, we will eventually reach a natural rank, and when this takes place, we will be matched at others who have earned similar ranks, and since none of us will have done so by cheating, we will have matches with more competitively arranged players. since our ranks will be more indicative of our actual skill levels (they will not be influenced as much by cheating), mm will be able to do a better job of arranging balanced matches, which leads to better competition and more fun. and since cheaters will not be able to level up as high as they did before, you will be matched against fewer cheaters, so more of your matches at your natural level will be fair.

there are many gains to be expected by resetting ranks and getting rid of cheaters. that you fail to recognize any of them indicated that you fail to properly understand how the rank system workd and how resetting ranks will affect how matches are arranged. if you properly understood these things, you would realize that your claim is silly and false.

Couldn't that be accomplished without a rank reset and just with eliminating cheaters?

no, and i have explained why in this thread and in others. just getting cheaters out of mm will help, but all of our ranks will still be artificially placed because of the affects of cheaters, so the player pool for each playlist will be needlessly dispersed too widely.

by resetting ranks AND getting rid of cheaters, all of the players for each gametype will be within a small range pf ranks, and then we will move up together, so mm will be able to function more smoothly at all ranks. since all of the players will start from scratch without cheaters, and since all of us will level out at a smaller range of ranks, mm will have more players from which to choose to arrange matches for players at all levels, making it much easier to find balanced matches AND making it faster for mm to do so.

now that ranks have been wiped away and you have read more of what bungie has to say about ranks being wiped clean, what do you think?
