Subject: A more noticible pm system

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

The indicator up top refreshes every 5 minutes with messags, and it updates instantly every time you read a message now too.

Considering that it is at the top of every page, I think that is enough. It isn't email, after all.
That's true. The 5 minute thing can be kind of a bad thing too. I person could PM me this:

"Meet me in this Chat Room. Thanks"

I notice I have a new message 5 minutes later and I go to the chat room and the guy got tired of waiting and left.

Little things like that hve happened to me lately.

Then how come I still didn't get an answer from a mod.

Because sometimes they miss messages. Recon's mentioned before in the past that his messages pile up so high he doesn't get at all of them since the new PMs are at the top.

Now...if Achronos were to implement my singing-telegramesqe PM system, we'd never have that problem.

I think this idea is viable and could provide a more noticeable alternative to the Message Center (1) thing. I know vbulletin does this and it is not 1 pop-up for every message but a pop-up just with a set amount of characters of the first pop-up along with the name of the sender and the date of the message. It usually then gives you the option of going to the full message in the main window or just closing the pop-up and ignoring it. Also usually when a feature like this is implemented the user is given a option to disable pop-ups at there own whim.

As guardian said, I think Vbulliten has an awesome setup, PM wise. When you get a private message, it shows a small pop-up saying the name of the sender, the subject, and the first sentence of the message. I use this to decide if its worth the time to go read the PM, sometimes I am really busy..

Couldn't hurt, could it...?

Any small pop-up would become a nuisance for anyone who gets a lot of PMs and may people would just disable it. Cool for those who'd want it, right? Well, the web team has an attitude against adding features for the sake of adding them. Keep it simple. A singing telegram is simple.

Which the new system allowed me to take care of actually.

The current PM system highlights unread PM's which makes them stand out from the read ones.

This allowed me to go through the pages and pages of PM's that I have and find the remaining unread messages that were keeping my counter in the triple digits. So for me, I love the new PM system. Sure a "sent items" folder would be helpful, but as long as quoting keeps catching on, I am good.

why are you always right?

"heh"

The pop-up idea isn't a very good one - it's implemented on some other sites and it's always blocked by Firefox or any other blocker software.

Which is fine by me.
