Hands down, the most underplayed gametypes in Halo are Race and Rally modes. If you were in charge of planning multiplayer gametypes for Halo 2, how would you change the race and rally modes to make them more appealing to players?

* Destruction mode: Teams race to acquire parts to some ultimate weapon that's located at some central location in the map. The first team to get all the parts back to the station and activate the weapon wipes out the opposing teams base and wins the match. The trick to this mode is that you race to the locations to get the parts, but if you die on the way back, you have to retrive it again. I miss when games had "super weapons" which were really unbalanced but hard to get, this could sort of bring that back.

* Base Control: Two teams start next to each other, and they have to reach some goal at the other side of the map. The first team through each checkpoint can activate turrets and guard posts to keep the other team from passing through, so it's necessary to have scouts keeping the path clear, etc. If done correctly, I think it could really work.

* Chase Mode: Team game. Both teams start near one another and near vehicles of their respective races. Team A plays as humans and has various check points to reach in a certian time limit (or with a certian number of respawns). Team B plays a covies and has to keep team A from reaching their goal. I think the dynamic of vehicle play restricted to the races could be interesting. An ATV in conjunction with good warthog protection and a tank escort could be a dangerous thing.

* VIP: Much like coutnerstrike, one team starts with a VIP that's restricted to a one "dualie" hand weapon of their choices (pistol, plasma pistol, smg, etc). That team has to escort the vip through various points in the map (time limit, few respawns). Both teams have access to vechicles.

I'm sure there's plenty of other possiblities. Post ideas here, especially if you have an interesting idea that only uses the new ATV buggy.

bah

UT2004 has a "race" mode where you take control over these beacon places. It's sort of a race to control them, but way different. You actually get to kill people.

That's the type of thing I'm hinting at. The modes in Halo just aren't the conducive to combat, though, with the right group can be incredibly fun and strategic. I'm trying to envision ways to make the mode more engaging and action heavy. Let's get some ideas flowing.

btw - I think a Bungie VIP went to IGN xbox general boards some time ago and asked about race/rally mode game ideas.

bah

A level designed specifically for race, where the targets are hard to get to, and are defended by people. There could be a team of defenders and racers. It would switch off every five minutes. There could be a huge hoop, and driving a hog through it scores a point, like basketball. And there would be three tiers to jump from. The highest tier would score the most points. The defense would be the defenders. They would be sitting in turrets that shoot tank rounds, and reload fast. Their objective would be to kill the people in the air before they get through the hoop. Going from the top tier would mean more points, but a better chance of being killed.

I like the way that sounds. We could extrapolate that even further. If the maps was linear you could turn this into a true rally game type. For example, you have teams of 8. The match starts, and 2 players from each team enter the map and make a dash for vehicles and the scoring posts. Now, once they reach it, they have the option to keep going to score at the next post, or get out of their vehicle and stay to prevent the other team from scoring. Every 30 sec, 2 more players from each team enter and try to score. You continue like this for a couple of rounds and the team with the most points at the end, wins.

Or, you could take your original idea and add an oddball skull into the equation. Now the game becomes sort of like bombing run in Unreal, where you can either jump through the hoops or shoot the oddball through. You could even use standard CTF maps and change the game into a straight up bombing run match and it would still be fun.

Anyone have interesting ideas for air vehicle types.
