We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

I was just watching Saving Private Ryan, and it made me feel like -blam!- for playing games like Halo 2. Damn you Hitler.

Weird. Not 10 minutes ago I was watching part of the same movie. It really makes you think about what those people actually went through. I doubt many people really understand the true intensity of war.

As Tim O'Brien put it in his book, "The Things They Carried", to say that "war is hell" is shallow. Because war is also beautiful. In its raw intensity, it is bewildering and awe inspiring.

But then again, to me, everything is war.

Did he ever fight in a war? Because I have to doubt that he ever went through anything like the soldiers at Normandy went through. This is why we have Veteran's Day, although it's sad that we need a set day for it. These people deserve respect for their acts every day of their life, or even afterlife.

Every person who creates a cause for war should die. If they are causing more suffering and death than would occur in a war to get rid of them they need to go. If the war itself would cause more suffering than if it hadn't occured, than it is not justified. The Iraq war is most likely one of these; even if Saddam were to die, someone just as bad would take his place.

Human nature sucks. We should be better than that.

Tim O'Brian has either never fought in a war, or is won of those psychos that like war. Like Hitler. He said that the First world war was one of the best experiences in his life. And we all no what was wrong with him. There are those that like war, but i think they are m,ostly psychos.

Who is this character any way. Is he some lunatic? Sure sound like it.

Opps nearly got political there. Good thing i changed what i said.

BTW I read in a newspaper here in Britain that some tv networks didnt show saving private ryan due to bad language. It sounds like that it was going to be shown at prime-time but some regulater said "put it back to after ten due to the bad language". WTF I agree it shouldnt be shown at prime time myself, but not due to swearing. The strong violence and gore would be unsuitable and disturbing for younger viewers (i dont think it would turn them into murderers though, unlike some really stupid pressure groups). The violence in the film is an issue, but not the language. Let young kids hear swearing, just dont disturb them with graphically violent images. Really strange priorities i think.

Is this true?

That is really bizarre. I mean, the language is almost an afterthought compared to the violence in that movie. It is the most realistic WWII movie out there though...

About war beings unjust, is it unjust to wage war to save people from mass-genocide? Not saying I have a romanic view of war. Quite the contrary, but it is fascinating.

I have never been in a war, only fights, with knives and the occasional gun that I thought was real. I have never felt more alive than when I am on the edge of death, save for a few religious experiences. People who like combat generally do not like war, per se. They don't usually like killing. If they can be happy about killing ,it is probably because they have made it impersonal.

Some people like combat because of chaos, some people like it because it makes them strong, others like it because it instills discipline in them, and some feel a spiritual connection. Some like the friendships that form between them and their buddies. Most people who like 'war', meaning combat, are not psychos, and are the most human, sane people you will ever meet.

I have heard about the emotions you have descibed Shuriken, and do understand why that would be true. What I'm talking about those people that think war is a good thing, like Hitler, for example.

I do not in any way claim to have any experience of any combat etc, so my particular ideas may be wrong. I just think that war and killing is wrong. I think it is a drain on the progress of the human race. I also, unfortunately, think it is unlikely ever to end. I think that enough of the human race is violent and angry enough at any time to perpetuate war for ever.

Yup, I am a pessimist.

Hey, pessimism isn't bad. It's just an aspect of being a realist.

I agree with DaedelusMJ12 too, but when it comes to war: (it's a quote)

- "In war there is no substitute for victory" - General Mac Arthur

and in the end there can be only one victorious.

"War is delighted by those who haven't experienced it." ...I just forget who said it. :-(
