why is it that bungie was able to completely re-do the website in one day, yet it is taking weeks for them to change the groups? it just dosn't make sense to me...

  • 04.10.2007 9:01 PM PDT

I personally think that groups are not going to return. It's all just a conspiracy to keep the main fourms more active. I never saw the point of groups anyway.

are you stupid? they made the site in a day?!!! where'd you get that from?!!! they put it up in a day. yeah, duh.

so will groups be. probably. who the hell would spend more than 24 hours uploading content to a site? what they did do is develop it for very long. if u recall the news article posted a few weeks before the update, then u'd know. stop complaining. there are already a billion threads like this!

A] I am not stupid.

B] what i meant was why didn't they do the same thing with groups. no -blam!- they worked on the site before hand. it dosn't make sense that it would take them this long to change the groups when they changed the site so quiclky.

C] this is not a complaint, it is a question. as in why would this take so long. what is the reason.

D] you are a jackass flamer that is no better than any of the people who complain.

i'm not a flamer. much the opposite, i'm tired of seeing threads like this getting flames. so now, well, yeah, fine, i'm turning into one!!!

no!!!

okay, look, they ran out of time, they'd said this everywhere already! just cope with it, please! and don't make new threads! i see that as the same as a complaint, taking more space on the front page. makes no difference to the rest of us.

Apparently, they are being corrected, which takes time.

I know you said that this isn't a complaint, but it really comes across like one. You said they "completely re[did] the website in one day" which, taken literally, means that they only worked for a day to change the website. That's inflammatory, and hence the reactions that could be characterized as "flames". Another reason people react negatively (Like I'm trying my best not to do) is because the fact that you posted this thread suggests that you haven't read through a lot of others here. Otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question you did in the way you did...

They haven't even started uploading the groups. They're still adding features and making sure all of the layouts are bug-free.They probably will be up in the next week or two....probably.

first of all it took 3 days to re-do the site.
now the groups are each there own site as well right? right. and each group site would be about on adverage 1/4 size of bungie.net
now lets say theres 1000 groups. this means that re-doing the groups would be like re-doing 250 bungie.net sites.
now 1/4 of three days is 18 hours so that means on adverage each group will take 18 hours to re-do on its own.
so final sum 1000 groups x 0.18 hours = 180 days.

so if they can do it in a few weeks thats pretty good i think.

Remember, there are HUNDREDS of groups in the 7th column. It will take some time to redo them. And they want the groups to look awesome!

Some poor sole is probably chained to his cubicle sorting through all the groups deciding which ones have active users and which ones are delete-able, you just need to have some patience.

I don't follow your logic... :/ Those are all your guesses, not facts.

Groups are on a standstill until Achronos and the Online Team find the time to work on them. Remember that they're also working on a certain game titled "Halo 3" and it's not exactly high on their priority list. As far as I heard today, the Online Team was going to have a meeting to discuss groups and other things. I've read from Achronos's posts that they may just transfer groups back on the site with no changes and then gradually give them new features.

That math for groups is a little bit off.

On this site they won't customize every group individually. Instead they create a standard group display template and populate it with each individual group's information. It probably took more than 3 days to re-do the site. Testing alone probably took at least 3 days. Groups are considerably more complex than the main forums since they have more options/customization. This causes groups to take longer to build and debug especially because they are being revamped on base levels whereas the main site recieved mainly an appearance upgrade.

Please note, according to Achronos, the forums (text) of the website take up a mere 10 GB. Now look at the pages of threads for any public forum. That's a lot. Groups are far less active, even the big ones like MBT. (Actually, I think that one is pretty much dead). Those little 20-person groups have maybe a page or two of threads. The Template for a group is the same for the entire group (rather than a template for each forum like H2, H3, etc). The template is miniscule. The number of threads (a few pages per group, and the larger groups can have more) could probably all fit into the Halo 3 forum. (1800 pages of posts). I think all of the groups are actually a fairly small part of bungie.net. Especially if they "lose" all the news/resources we were supposed to back up ourselves.

The web devs actually took quite a bit of time to work on the new site. You just didn't know about it. The devs just started working on groups right after the update, so they're actively planning, and working (and ultimately implementing) on groups right now. Some people get the misconception that the site update was quick, but the groups are taking forever. The site makeover was "behind the scenes" for a long time, but since you know groups are in the works, people get the idea it's taking a long time.

Also, I'm aware that you understand that it was being developed "before hand", but your original post kinda signifies that you look like a dope that doesn't know what you're talking about. I'm not implying you are, but you should have stated all of your thoughts in your original post.

I think the Disembodied Soul ate them. I hope the Soul added some ketchup or tabasco.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

The groups will be updated at once. They aren't going through each group and changing it. Getting the new features in the groups and getting them to function and make sense with the "New Hawtness" of the main froums is time consuming. Achronos and the web team knew what needed to be done for the main site and forums, now they are simply working on how to integrate the groups with the main site.

And I've seen statements like this in other places too. The fact that a lot of people here obviously don't have much experience with the time line involved in producing a website of this size, is probably why they're all so quick to demand additional features/changes. Look up things like "ASP.net", "SQL Server", etc to learn about server side web application development, and compare that to the amount of traffic and use this site gets, then try to imagine what types of systems might be required on the admin side of things, and you'll begin to see that it takes a long time. This site is not just some HTML files on a server... It's an application.
