I've noticed that the new hotness lacks the "discuss this topic" button at the bottom of the page. Instead it is located at the top. Now, most people read through the information and then want to talk about it. Although, we have to scroll up now for the link. Its a silly little thing, but it would make it nicer and more streamlined if that silly link appeared at the bottom of the update. Afterall, Bungies always looking for ways to improve their site...discuss this and any other little things about the updates that need tweaking.

I do not typically participate in the "discuss this story" threads. Actually "Discuss this Story" is a misnomer -- they are far too spammy and contain almost no "discussion."

That said, I think that at least having the link at the bottom of the page would encourage more people to actually read the story. Maybe!

I could swear it's at the bottom. I've just clicked it at least 4 times today.

Nope... it's the story archive that's at the bottom.

Oohhhh weird... you must be using a different browser. For us IE6 dinosaurs, it's at the top.

It is at the bottom... unless you're using IE6 and its busted html renderer (well, mostly... there are some other things than can push it up to the top, but it is mostly IE6 screwing up).

Really now, why are you using IE6. If you're allowed to install software on the computer you use, do everyone a favor and grab IE7 (Firefox 2 works too).

And if you're using Safari... get Firefox as well. Waaaay better.

Lots of companies (mine for example, and a ton of our clients) are refusing to allow their infrastructure to upgrade to IE7. Most are concerned about internal applications that might not work and training the unwashed masses how to handle tabbed browsing.

I know, it sounds silly, but there are so many people who really are freaked out when even an icon on a toolbar changes. Corporate inertia is a terrible thing.

Tell me about it!! I use my work computer most of the time and cannot install new software... I wish these dinosaurs would upgrade our browsers.

I agree the Discuss this Topic thing is kind of a joke. I admit sometimes people have discussions, but those are few and far between. I mean, why have a discussion there about "Multiplayer Madness" when everyone can go create their own thread about each little thing pertaining to it in the Halo 3 forum. I mainly use it just to show my appreciation for whatever the news story covers itself. I guess that in itself could be interpreted as a form of SPAM as there's not a real discussion going on. At least I try to make it more than 1-3 words.

I'd still like to see instant 7-day vacations for anything that's so simply posted like First post, almost 1st post, 2nd page, W00t!, Hi, etc. I suppose 'Thanks Frankie" is shaky ground heh?

You say tomato; I say potato.

I am sure you've all noticed that we are limited to one space in a row. I was just thinking it would help cut down on rediculous posts if the same principle was used on how many lines you can put between paragraphs. Any thoughts?

Also, when editing posts, previous edits are not displayed. (sometimes)

You should point out that fact that since IE6 is no longer supported, there will no longer be security updates, which could put them at risk. And IE6 is not secure as it is now, which is evident in Microsoft's emphasis on IE7's improved security. Also, mention how IE6 will no longer be supported by anyone who makes web pages (since it doesn't actually render pages like a web browser - but that's above their heads). This means that if they do not upgrade soon, they will be caught off guard when they are no longer able to view pages. This will afftect productivity, and cost them money in the long run.

Something like that. Just mention losing money in some way. You have to speak their language.

For anyone who has control over what they do, I beg you to look into either Firefox 2.0, or Opera 9.0. IE has made some changes for the better, but you will be doing anyone who makes web pages a huge favor by using a browser that can be counted on to render the page the way you expect it to, every time. (Incidentally, Opera seems to be the better renderer of the two, not stumbling on things that FF can have minor troubles with. This is mostly just minor aesthetic glitches though, to be fair.) I suggest that anyone who has not given Opera a try do so -- there are some nice features that you will porbably find very useful. The only problem it really has is the fact that not all sites support it, due to low usage. But you can do your part to help change that. ;)

That is a sad commentary on the state of corporations.

Perhaps so. But being on the bleeding edge is an expensive place to be. Shareholders aren't impressed that they are investing in a company that spends a lot of capital to ensure that they have the "latest and greatest" no matter the cost. Those shareholders want to know that their investment is being handled responsibly and in a cost-conscious manner.

To many investors, there is not much difference between putting new PC's on everyone's desk every year (when a 3-4 year cycle is standard) and throwing huge company parties in sports arenas. Both have little return on the money being spent.
And what does that have to do with the topic of this conversation? Yea, that's right. Nothing. Get back on topic. :P

I know what you mean. My dad's work place won't upgrade to Word 07. I bought it (the best one) and now I can't use it because my dad and I share the same computer. There is a way to transfer documents from word 03 to 07 but I heard it is hard to do.

Why are you supporting IE6? Huh? Just kidding, of course: I know all to well that so many people use it that you're forced to support it. And I agree that FF beats Safari. As far as IE7 upgrades: I think a lot of the resistance to upgrading at bigger companies might also be lazy IT people. Unless there is custom software on the desktop machines that requires IE6 (Ech!), there shouldn't be problem. Anything involving web content (i.e. corporate intranets, etc) should be fine, since IE7 uses a legitimate (generally standards compliant) rendering engine. IE7 is free for any valid installation of windows...

But I understand not being in the position to change things. The USB drive idea is the best solution I've heard yet.

Sorry for being totally OT, but the topic interests me and the conversation seems to have comfortably shifted.

I had to un-install IE7 on a few PC's here at our office so the officer's could do their online CLEET training. For some reason the CLEET training site wouldn't load on IE7, but worked perfectly fine with IE6. All's better now... they are done with the training and I re-installed IE7 which has worked perfectly fine with everything else.

The Federal government is worse. If my contract didnt require admin rights to my machine, I would be stuck using Mosaic. Many of the terminals in the office still have the amber and black monitors.
