Yes, I'm posting this in the Underground. You'll see why in a moment.

Personally, I enjoyed the ending. While it was very abrupt and it caught me off guard, looking back it can definately work from an artistic standpoint that I can agree with. Look on the back of the LE case: "He fought his way back, a trillion miles across the void, to protect the dearest prize of all: EARTH."

That pretty much sums up the game. At the very end, he has fought his way back and is ready to fight to the death for earth. (The only thing I'm missing is the fact that the battle still rages when only 15 ships attacked. I suppose the covenant sent reinforcements after Regret's screw up, at last knowing that it was indeed our homeworld.)

Now, watching the LE dvd they revealed that they intended for a climactic final battle for earth, but they didn't have time to do it. You can sense the Bungie's own disappointment in the way things turned out (awesomely, insanely great) as opposed to how they could have turned out (perfect).
On it's own, this ending could work, but the follow up Gravemind/Cortana scene definately hints at something more. If the flood made it to earth, which is (presumably) safe from the rings radius if you follow the 'Noah's ARK' theory, then the flood would be unstoppable, not even touching the unresolved covie conflict. Things are gonna get UGLY if this continues. ^_-

In many ways tha Halo saga parallels Marathon. Marathon 1 was farily simplistic story and gameplay wise, but amazing and influential nonetheless. So was Halo.
Marathon 2 was a totally new engine with new physics and visuals, and it expanded the story in drastic and unexpected ways ending in a cliffhanger of sorts. So was Halo 2.
Then Marathon: Infinity cam along. It was based on the already completed M2 engine and brought forth the epic conclusion the series promised. Okay, maybe it got a little TOO complicated, but that's beside the point.

Perhaps they have a Halo: Infinity (figuratively, not literally) on the back burner. They already have this amazing engine they spent the majority of Halo 2's development on to work with. They could produce a final installment in half the time and be totally free to contemplate the creative side of things to create the finale that they always envisioned.

No, I'm not 'suggesting' anything to Bungie, nor am I trying to tame the naysayers. Being an artist, I can understand Bungie's frustration. I also figured that, given all of the Halo/Marathon connections, I would point this out as a logical next step.

If this happens...I said it first.

That has nothing to do with this topic or this board.

And from what I've seen at the end of Halo 2, I bet the future can be nothing less than Epic...
