As a Squirrel Ninja I do hereby promise to uphold our traditions, beliefs, and secrets, to recruit and induct Squirrel Ninjas who represent our ideals with pride, and to defend our traditions at all costs to myself with no exception. As a Squirrel Ninja I promise this until I die, or can’t physically or mentally uphold the ways of the Squirrel Ninja.

Microsoft has owned Ensemble Studios for a LONG time, way before they started making Halo Wars. I'm not sure exactly how long, but I have an Age of Mythology disk with the Microsotf logo on it, and that game is fairly old.

yes, i know, since 2001. but i don't think everyone knew it. so it seems that Microsoft is really taking some power on Bungie, no? i doubt they had a say in whether or not Halo Wars could be made by a fellow slave of Microsoft! think about it, "NO, you cannot make a Halo game... no, we made Halo! What, we're fired? you can't fire us!.... what, you own us?... okay, fine, make HALO WARS!" *hangs up phone screaming*.

Dont quote me on this but if I remember correctly, when Microsoft purchased Bungie, Bungie retained some of thier IP, including the Halo Bible (story arc).

Achronos or another one of the Bungie staffers would be able to better clarify this.

As far as Ensemble goes, old news. I remember playing Age of Empires with the big Microsoft logo on the box, and that was 1997.

Lol, I don't think MS ever really said "We own you Ensemble" like they do with Bungie, so I doubt many people would really know about the ownership.
I'm actually a little surprised they are not letting Bungie develope it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Halo :CE supposed to be a RTS game?

I found it accidentally, and I'm sure i could again if i needed to. actually, i will need to, but that's off-topic.

At Wikipedia, I was searching the page on Microsoft, for some important reason. Then, I clicked the link that took me to a list of all the companies owned by Microsoft.

Now, either I'm blind or ignorant, but Ensemble Studios, which is making Halo Wars, is on the list. much more recent than Bungie, I think. I'll edit this with a link.

Who knew of this before? Everyone but me? A few people? Or no one at all?

I don't think this thread could go in any other forum but The Flood. and for obvious reasons, I chose this one.

AND HERE'S DA LINK!!!

i said HALO WARS, not HALO CE!

MSFT got Ensemble in 2001, not 1997 or any earlier! the MSFT logo was because it was probably published by MSFT Studios or something like that.

but i'm upset at Microsoft. they're really trying to take all power. First, the Zune, a bad copy of iPod. Then, Vista, an operating system that encorporates all features MSFT has ever worked on, but is really slow and cheap compared to OS X 4.0.

Now, they're working on Vienna, which will either be really good, or really bad.

look it up, i don't feel like explaining!

who's talking about Halo CE? I mean HALO WARS!

and ur wrong, Microsoft accquired Ensemble Studios in 2001! Bungie in 2000...

so it was almost like a forced allowing of Ensemble by Bungie to let Halo Wars go on. i don't like Microsoft anymore. they used to be cool. but then the friggin 'Zune' copy of the iPod, Vista, way too much just for competition. Apple isn't even a threat, as I see it. they've got their people, and we've got ours!

so, you know, i'm just upset to find all of this out right now and no one really cares.

Yeah I know we're talking about Halo Wars. But I think that Halo :CE was originally going to be a RTS, not a FPS, so it surprises me that MS would not allow Bungie to make Halo Wars.

Microsoft's ownership of a developer only means deeper pockets for budgets...no complaints here.

Bungie may have intellectual property on the story arch, but Eric Nylund works for MS game studios...hmmmm

i have no idea about that one. no, that's not true. Halo was being made for Macs originally, before they began for XBOX. and according to the screenshots and available info, it doesn't seem like an RTS at all.

oh, well, that had to be for the Mac version, never finished. Then that's true, Microsoft did indeed force SOMETHING on them, no?

hmmm..maybe didnt force them to do anything....I mean, they needed a good spearhead for their console, but maybe they just realized that it would make a versatile and ground breaking shooter rather than an RTS. Plus, there were alot of RTS fads back then. Command and Conquer, Starcraft-warcraft etc.

If Halo came out as an RTS it would have alot to compete with, and the market share in Mac gamers etc wasn't all that profitable. I'm glad it went the route it did, but the ancient screenshots of the rts demo presentation of halo was pretty sick

well, i didn't mean much of a 'forcing'. i kinda meant a little secret conspiring. Controlling Bungie behind the closed curtains. you know, using secrets against Bungie sounds impossible, but it could happen easily.

Go Chiefs

Microsoft did a great job of buying Bungie but letting them work autonomously; letting them retain the same environment that brought us great games and continues to do so.

But, make no mistake, Microsoft owns everything about Bungie, right down to Ling Ling's head (and yes, even the Halo Bible if Bill wanted to read it).

Slightly Off-Topic: Now that I think about it, Halo is very successful. I don't think we have to worry about Halo Wars. I doubt Bungie would let Ensemble develope it without keeping a very close eye on them.

bungie doesn't have a say in it unfortunately. We'll more than likely see THQ of all bloody things develop a halo title someday... This is what happens when good games start to get prostituted out.
