"Inside every cynical person is a disappointed idealist."
George Carlin

The new site wasn't made in a day. The web team put it together, and one they just replaced it with the old one. I don't understand why they didn't do that with the groups. Why not just keep the groups on the site, give yourself as much time as needed to create the new ones, and then replace them? That way everyone's happy...

Maybe because the old groups are incompatible with the new Bungie.net?

They are sleepy.

I think its probably more work than they thought it would be, or maybe re-introducing groups take longer than doing the actual site and they wanted/needed the new hawtness up before re-introducing the groups.

I think it has more to do with the look of the site. We couldn't have the new new hawtness and groups in the format of the old new hawtness, now could we?

So, we got told to "play outside" until they are finished.

It's really cold outside. I want to come back in.....

I do think there may be some effort required to port them. Furthermore, Achronos wants to upgrade them. Group activity is declining and only 6 percent of B.net users are in them. I hope the New Hawtness helps groups in the long run. I am willing to go without them in the short run, but they do need to improve or I will eventually quit using them.

I have been posting in a few of the temporary group forums, and I now spending more time on other sites. However, it would be nice if groups are finished soon. On the other hand, I prefer quality over speed.

So they will probably work on groups once the Beta goes Live?

Perhaps with the look, but more likely with the underlying functionality of the site.

I suspect (based on many statements to the effect) that groups (as they were) were incompatible with the new site, and are being completely rewritten, re-featured, and revamped.

Due to the impending release of the Beta, I would speculate that the site had to go live around the time that it did. Groups were either not completed or (my preferred theory) is that in addition to making the groups, migration tools had to be written to move their content from the old version into the new version. The only way to truly test those new features and the migration tools would be to have static group data to work with (so you can get a reliable before-after comparison). Sort of like cleaning house, you can't get the house really clean when the kids and dogs are running around in it. So, we got told to "play outside" until they are finished.

Since this isn't a dot com site and we didn't pay anything for our membership, there really is less pressure to provide the service with no downtime. Since this site, these forums and the groups are a gift to the community, I believe that the concept is more, "let's make something we're going to want to release" rather than "lets just patch this beast and move along".

Last I heard, Bungie is in a state of disorder (real busy to be more accurate) right now, so its best not to hold your breath waiting.

I know, but that would be my guess.

Well unless the web team has other things to do, I don't think that their 'busyness' has anything to do with Halo 3. The web team, in my knowledge, doesn't have a whole lot to do with the game developers. I could be wrong though.

But yeah, I also bet it's probably just not compatible.

Of course the web team's business has to do with Halo 3. The web team has to design, build, and test that Halo 3 stats section, which will be much larger and more comprehensive. Furthermore, I imagine that they have been/will be managing the massive data stream emanating from the Alpha, Internal Beta, and Public Beta builds. If not for the web team, then the developers would not have anything but a massive pile of unorganized data to work from. Their job has everything to do with Halo 3.

Not with the actual game development. Cinematics, design, story, publishing, scoring, hiring, building etc., they have nothing to do with.

Like I said, I think, not know this.

But you said that the reason the web team is busy has "nothing to do with Halo 3." I was refuting this -- I think it has everything to do with Halo 3.

Ummm... if Bungie's web team is constantly busy with just stats and Halo relaying through the site, then I must say that we need a new web team.

i dont get why they are trying to keep anything posted in the old groups at all. anything wanted by group members could/was easily saved by admins and the stuff in the forums is completely useless as we now have so much more to discuss and anything done in the past can be redone. the only thing worth keeping was the group name and members simply for easier transition.

i say they should have started 100% over and the groups worth keeping would have been remade and the public forums would be less clogged, though still pretty bad.

I agree. Saving all the information from past groups, besides members and names, is an unnecesary luxury.

This may be true for the useless spam-and-forum-game groups, but not for the groups that actually had purpose. I am very involved in a group that archives and stores 7th Column information, and we have dozens of interviews with moderators, Bungie staff, and veteran forum members that are stored only on the group (except for a few that I archived).

I'd be quite sad if we lost all of that data.

i got FFXI and AC4 so im good. i always look forward to new News and content from Bungie, but i realize the work they have left for Halo 3. if you mods can take our impatient rants, we can take the end result of waiting; a damn fine game/site! lol. its a burden for any Halo fan but we will endure!

but please dont tease us over the Halo movie! i didnt know it was April and i think a part of me died that day (or the day after when i realized it was fake... dang public forums! ruining my dreams!)

I understand that it is a plus, however with all the stuff they have to change, I don't see the point if it costs too much trouble.

This is why Achronos gave us weeks notice. I was able to save all my group's important features almost a month before groups were disabled.
