I mean if i for example write: WTF . i'm really dodging the filter. Because this stands for "what the -blam!-", which is quite clearly, blammed out. But, people know what you are saying, and its not being blammed out, so its really a dodge on the -blam!- filter. I guess its just a small problem but in the rules Bungie says "do not dodge the blam filter." I guess a few posts is fine, but when people have STFU or WTF in their names, if they had the non-acronym version, with the swear word (with some sort of filter dodge), in all likelihood they would be banned. However, the acronym is still expressing the word, so its not any different. I'm just wondering, why if people post, STFU, or WTF, they aren't told to change it, or given a warning. I've seen threads titled "WTF", and if somebody said What The -blam!-? (and the word wasn't blammed out), I bet they would be banned. Even though the word is expressed with an "f", its still conveys the same meaning.

Obviously, i'm just wondering why. I also happened to use these all over my message (so sorry about that. i wouldn'tve if i'd ever seen a moderator care about acronym swearing).

if cursing was so taboo Damn would be filtered out. but Bungie is nice and so they let us use curse worlds so long as its mature (well thats debatable). i think they really only care about excessive/unneccesary use and flaming (mainly if the curse words are directed at some one).

WTF can easily be translated to Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, as well as What the Frick, Freak, and/or Frankie.

Sure, it's not like many people read it like that, but if people are being excessively "STFUey" and such, the moderators will usually warn them, telling them to tone it down a notch.

Thats not the real reason, its not taken into consideration. For example there is a word that is "a bundle of sticks". However, most people use it as a different form. There is another word that means a "runty female dog". If i used the non filtered version of this word, or attempted to dodge the filter with this word, I would probably at least receive a warning.

Interesting point.

Though I think that I am able to draw the line between someone inserting an asterisk to replace a "U" or a number to replace a letter, and an acronym that (while representing a expletive) doesn't come as close to expressing it.

For example, the acronym for the Boeing B-52 is BUFF. It is always explained (in polite circles) as "Big Ugly Fat..... Fellow". We all know the real final word.

But that is just my point of view. I can understand your point, but I don't share it.

Recon, yeah i can see where your coming from. Its not nearly as bad as posting an expletive, but it still expresses the expletive. Instead of wondering what the person said (which was then filtered out), I know exactly what they are trying to express. Posting the word with an * in it is far worse, but i am still conveying the meaning. Its just like how in the New Mombassa rules, "buger king" is banned from the forums, as it expresses the same meaning, as the other version. The meaning is still being expressed, i clearly understand what expletive is being used in "WTF" or "STFU".

From now on "bad kid", "bk", and their variants are all banned from this forum. This has also been expanded to include "Burger King" and "King" just in case you all decide to start using those as a way around the rule.

As you can see hear, Burger king is banned from New Mobassa, as it conveys the same meaning.

Let's take a look.

-blam!- and -blam!-

Oh, look! They're both -blam!-ed out. I've never heard of an acronym using those two words. And if someone said it, I would hardly be offended.. Of course, I'm not easy to offend.

if your really worried about using acronyms and getting in trouble, dont do it. but it seems you only brought it up as a "what if" instead of really caring. dont worry if other people use em, if it bothers you go to a different thread. if some one does something wrong let the Mods/Admins take care of it. if its something really bad, send em a message (the mods) and avoid the post.

SOB uses one.

But let us not get into explorations of our cursing acronym vocabularies. I understand the difficulty here, but it is a matter of degrees. The purpose of the acronyms (in real life usage) was to avoid using the full terms. In other words, they were intended to be a more acceptable and palatable alternative.

For me and my evaluation of the community's ability to handle them, as long as the acronyms are used sparingly and are not part of other rule-violating activities, I don't have too much of a problem.

For example, "Frankie posted a picture of himself in a 300 Spartan speedo outfit? WTF!" Would likely get a grin from me.

However, "You dumb asses should STFU because none of you know WTF you are talking about!" could get a warning or even a time out from me.

That seems like intelligent policy. If somebody actually uses the word in context, and against other people, then the acronym is given a warning for, and perahaps given a temporary ban. The first example, is probably perfectly acceptable, to anybody. But the second one is inflammatory, and is using the words to their full degree, and power. So obviously the second one is given a warning, or temporary ban, and the first one, well everyone posts "LOL" or "ROFL"

IMO, that works. If somebody actually uses it in the same context as somebody dodging the filter, then they receive the same consequences. On the other hand, if they use it in a manner that is socially acceptable, and is simply using it in a fashion that is used to express astonishment, or whatever else the acroynym can convey, then its left alone.

Yeah this was more of, isn't it a "breaking the rules" thing. It really is, but i guess thats taking it on a technicality that only a lawyer would actually try and apply to real life.

Case and point my dear friend. This is a situation where bypassage would be necessary because it's her name, but you cannot properly bypass it without spelling it wrong, hence redering it someone else's name.

It's all contextual. If it's said only to put someone down or demean someone else, I think it's unacceptable. Any form of demeaning is unacceptable in my mind, but that's just me. I have a few word quirks that I cannot stand. When someone else calls someone else "ghey". I hate that. It's one of the worst things that can ever be said. For purposes of explaining myself without confusing I'm going bypass the filter, I hope the Ninjas will forgive me, but if they deem it inappropriate I allow them to change it. "fa ggot" is undoubtedly the worst word ever. When said word is used against someone else, I immediately take offense. As stated by the OP, it means a bundle of sticks. Now, there's some historical debate on whether or not that's where it derived from, but I think it does which is why I take extreme offense to the word. "Ghey" people were burned alive in England and "fa ggots" were used to make the fire. There's just some words that should not be bypassed and some have legit reasons for being bypassed. Whatever. I'm done ranting and making myself feel bad. I don't even know if anything I just said is relevant, but whatever. I said it.

LMAO, i bet Microsoft is a swear word in some country. We should blam it out. When Frankie said "Microsoft" it would read "-blam!- has decided that Halo 3 will release on November 14th.

Uh.... lets not go there. This isn't a debate of this kind, and such debates aren't permitted here.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Haha, what a funny coincidence that I just wrote up an article on Bungie.net acronyms and dodging the blam filter earlier this afternoon on Bungiepedia. Maybe you read it and this sparked your question.

At any rate, however, I agree that it's all a matter of context and degree. Certain words are clearly offensive no matter how they are used, whereas acronyms in other cases may add humor or emphasis to a well-thought-out post. I think that the mods are able to distinguish which is which, and so I'm not too worried about it.

  • 04.16.2007 8:13 PM PDT

I'm not that active, but never dead.

I do believe that bungie has a history of using acronym's that have bad words in them.

So I Bungie can use acronyms, so just the community be able to.

Are you serious? Are you actually asking if WTF is dodging the profanity filter?

And let's be clear on one point; WTF is not an acronym, it is an abbreviation. Acronyms are a certain type of abbreviation that can be sounded out in a "word" and not sounded out in its seperate letters. NASA is a acronym, because you actually say NASA and not "enn-ay-ess-ay". CIA is an abbreviation because you sound it out "see-eye-ay". ANSI is an acronym, FBI is an abbreviation. Get it?

And to anybody that thought to themselves "WTF is dmbfan going on about now?!?!" when reading my off-topic paragraph above, SHAME ON YOU FOR DODGING THE PROFANITY FILTER!!!!!

Anyway, I really don't think WTF or STFU would be considered dodging the profanity filter.

If you wanted to be completely correct about it, abbreviations like FBI and CIA also have there own special name, initialism. So the last sentence of your second paragraph would be, "ANSI is an acronym, FBI is an initialism, and they are both abbreviations. Get it?"

This is interesting. I had no idea that FBI wasn't an acronym until just now. So how do I know about initialisms, you ask? Well, the internet is a wonderful source of knowledge. :)

And yeah, wtf should stay. I mean, what would I do if I couldn't use omgwtfroflmao?
