Tombstone is brilliant. Certain Affinity did a fantastic job on recreating Hang 'Em High to fit the obvious gameplay differences in Halo 2. I've played 2v2 BR slayer and FFA Snipes on it and both work wonderfully. I'm hearing good things about CTF on Tombstone and I have no doubts that they're true.
Desolation, on the other hand, is a different story. I was looking foward to this map more-so than Tombstone because I was a huge fan of the original and because Certain Affinity said that they were designing it with proffesional gamers in mind. While they got the layout for the map spot-on for proffesional gaming with plenty of choke points and awesome map control ability, they made it a wasted effort with the weapon layout they chose.
Please name me one feature of the Sentinal Beam that makes it a "proffesional weapon"(I'll save you the effort and tell you that there isn't). I don't think I need to say anything about the sword being on the map. Having two overshields destroys any map control aspect of the level relating to power-ups. An alternating spawn of camo and OS would have done nicely if you wanted to put two power-ups on the map(same goes for Tombstone). Finally, I was extremely dissapointed at the exclusion of the sniper rifle as it was a key gameplay component on Derelict.
Now, all that being said, one might say, "Well why don't you just put it on Human weapon sets you big baby?" The same reason why you can't play Human weapons on Elongation; brute shots become rockets. So thanks for giving proffesional gamers a sweet map if they want to play rifles, but I'd say that they're probably going to give it a try and then leave it alone.
But ending on a grateful notel; artistically, the maps are the most beautiful thing seen on Halo 2 and they're a good finish for a good (cough) game.
