i was playing XL and came across a whole server of cheaters.

so i though bungie should get the opinion from honest gamers like you and me.

the question im asking is how would YOU stop cheaters

P.S: it would be really good if bungie would pin this and look at our opinions on the matter.

please dont lock this its for the good of everybody.

What's XL?

And I'm afraid this won't be pinned and will probably be locked - it's irrelevant and you posted links to this thread in other forums. ]:

I would suggest fining cheater's credit cards (parents won't let little Bobby play on Live if they start getting charged when he cheats...) but you can now play Live without one with the 360. Banning by box ID would be excellent, but it would create problems for buying used consoles and finding you're banned from Live or MM.

what i would do is bring out all the 360's and xbox's with a chip that detects cheating hacking or modding, if id does detect something the person should be banned for a time depending on how often they cheat. the ban should increase with each offence.

XL stands for Xbox Live

Uhmm... I think this is one of those situations where if you ask for it, it wont happen.

Like becoming a forum mod.

If you ever ask, it wont ever happen.

Asking for your thread to be "pinned" (stickied) Isn't something most appreciate. And begging for it not to be locked for the sake of humanity?
While cheaters on XBL are upsetting, i doubt they hold much effect to the entire human race. Also, cheating will always be an issue. There will be cheating in halo 3 eventually... Like with almost any other game.

This doesn't go for games, this go's for Computers and technology in general. No matter how secure a system, it is equally vulnerable. There is no utopia of programing.

the problem is not stopping them it is detecting them. Its alot harder than you would think. You can't ban some1 because they got 50 kills and no deaths. They might have had a sniper and a sword. Also banning someone is a very legal issue because they have paid for a service that they are now being denied and if the alligations and banning for cheating is proved false bungie could be in a lot of trouble.

Love you Bungie!
Still playing Halo1 Custom Edition!

Yeah Sean, it IS a legal issue as we have paid for the service. the samething is true for the new maps since we've paid for the XBL and previous map packs. That doesn't keep M$ from forcing us to buy the new maps...4$ isn't alot you'll say, but it's for only TWO maps made by a team of like 10 people overlike 2 months. let's say a MERE 200 000 players buy the maps. You have the answer.
200 000X4. 800 000$ for a couple months of work.. Nothing.

Yeah, we could call it the bansaw... no wait, how about the banhammer... yeah, sounds perfect. Sorry, if you cheat, you deserve to be permanently banned.

I know. Wouldn't it be cool if we had some sort of.. Oh, let's say 7-step plan for global takeover? We could even call it "Bungie's Seven Step Plan for World Domination." How awesome would that be!? However, uh, looks like it's not going to happen. :(

I would have a list of things done to them.

1) Credit cards fined for tampering with equipment. About 300 dollars
2) IP Ban them
3) Ban there Xbox
4) Ban their credit card.
(This way, they would have to use another credit card instead)

Eventually, they'd be spending WAY to much money and they wouldn't feel much of a need to cheat anymore :)

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

When they can get away with it, there is a small subset of humans who will cheat at every possible opportunity. You cannot stop them from trying in any way -- not even the threat of jail (see: all white collar criminals).

The best way, therefore, to stop cheating in a video game is to engineer it so that cheating becomes extremely, prohibitively difficult. With this in place, cheaters will try to cheat, as is inevitable. But they will not be able to succeed. The only question, obviously, is how to engineer a game with the foresight and solidity to keep cheaters from cheating. That, I leave to the eminently wise folks at Bungie.

Foman, what's that saying?
Make something fool-proof and you'll get a better fool.

It's not really possible to entirely thwart cheating, but you can make it dang hard. It'd also be nice if Xbox Live banned everyone (from Xbox Live entirely) who is banned for modding, etc. This would keep them out of all of our games.

I have no specific solution, though.. Just a few thoughts. I'd deal with fixing problems to cheating if I decide to make a game or something. ;)

Yeah Sean, it IS a legal issue as we have paid for the service.

Wrong. This was in the contract that every person agreed to when they signed up for Xbox LIVE:

We may cancel or suspend your Service at any time. Our cancellation or suspension may be without cause and/or without notice. Upon Service cancellation, your right to use the Service stops right away. Once the Service is cancelled or suspended, any data you have stored on the Service may not be retrieved later. Our cancellation of the Service will not alter your obligation to pay all charges made to your Billing Account. If we cancel the Service in its entirety without cause, then we will refund to you, on a pro-rata basis the amount of your payment to Microsoft corresponding to the portion of your Service remaining right before such cancellation.

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use caps lock as my "run" key, and to never, ever, leave a single BoB alive."

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

It'd be wonderful that from the time of birth the children born in the world were marked with tags notifying people as to what kind of person he/she might be. Maybe a few stickers saying: Arrogant, Dishonest, Habitual Cusser, etc. However we can't do that because these habits form over time. The problem with stopping people from doing something that they feel is the God given right or is habitual can be like seperating the water from Jello once it has set. Those type of people believe that it is the most unconstitutional (Americans) and disgusting abomination that someone should correct or impede upon what they want to do rather than what they have the right to do.

This is the case of many of the cheaters in Xbox Live. They believe that have the right to be on the Internet and that they have the mandate to do whatever they believe they have the right to do. That is not the case, to be extremely clear. The fact that people believe they can cheat and be anonymous about cheating is about as truthful as scientist(s) extracting sunlight from cucumbers. What we must understand is that there is absolutely in no way a patch for human stupidity and/or arrogance. The only way to combat cheating is to attack it at the heart of what humanity has programmed into the human spirit. You have to reverse engineer the human mind telling it that the greed, lust, sin, & everything evil in it is wrong. Cheating is an old art, should I say, that has been conjured by people to provide pleasure; and I doubt it is something that will rid itself of people. This may be an exaggeration of what is happening on Xbox Live. However if you want to stop someone from doing something so inherent in human nature, you must change the nature of humans themselves. People will continue to cheat because they believe they are achieving something. They might achieve this "something" for a short time, however, the repercussions shall resonate so greatly that their foundations of belief shall wither away until they collapse under them. That is the result of the Banhammer.

The Banhammer is the tool that we put our hope and trust in to cure us (Xbox Live Community) of the human imperfections (cheating). The mere fact that the temptation will always reside in people on Xbox Live will result in stronger Banhammers. It is the unbiased, perfect tool that seperates the good from the bad. It ever so doth give justice to those who indubitably seek it by cheating. So my entire point of reason to this subject is that the system will sort the cheaters from the players. The system will deliver the justice, it will handle the dirty work, it will cure us of this disease. All we need to do as a Community to stop cheating for good is to report it via the Xbox Live feedback interface, then the system will take over. Might I add that sentient AI like Mr. D. Soul is quite efficient, effective, deadly, and merciless.

For a list of reasons that you can use to properly leave beneficial feedback on I would recommend reading this page: Xbox Live Online Policies

You can have an account without a credit card on the 360.

2) IP Ban themMany, if not most, people have dynamic IPs. Meaning they get a new one every time they turn their internet device off and on.

3) Ban there XboxGood idea, but what about the second-hand market? Buying an Xbox and finding out you're pre-banned from MM is a little harsh. This seems the best way of permanently ridding MM of cheaters at the moment, though.

4) Ban their credit card.See point 1.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

You do two things, actually.

1. Cheating should be made as annoying to accomplish as possible, where the effort involved to cheat becomes not worth. Note that this is different from "difficult". Assuming you can hide behind difficulty was one fallacy of the Xbox 1's hardware security. All it takes is one guy from MIT. No - what it needs to be is ANNOYING to do - that way the hackers who "just want to prove it can be done" can have their fun, but the script kiddies (the real problem) stay away because it is simply annoying to do.

2. Cheating should be made as unprofitable as possible. So, while you can't get rid of all cheats, try and make sure that the ones that are there aren't all that bad. Superjumping could probably be classified as "sure, it is cheating, but honestly, you're not going to win much with it".

DarkM0d is right. It most likely won't happen.

P.S. If people need to cheat to play a video game, then they obviously don't have the skill to play a video game.

Nobody on Live has any rights. Therefore, we could ban them forever. However, we first have to make sure we're not banning customers, right? So, we just have to make it near impossible.

Shouldn't this be moved? Not that it's not a good thread, but definitely placed incorrectly.
