Subject: Kinda Harsh

I never say stuff like bk or noob to people but banning them because they do woah. why do they have to be so polite (couldve said a different word but didnt).

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

The moderators are just sick of dealing with it, I'd assume

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Those words have been reinvented here on Bungie.net. They may be harmless in the real world, but here they have been used precisely because harmful words get blammed out. They are replacements for much, much worse words.

Even worse, these words are used for no purpose other than to insult others and to try to stratify people -- forum regulars from the newer guys, good players from not-so-good players, and so on.

I wish I could link you Recon's Rant, but it's down until the groups come back up. The basics of his essay are that "noob" and "bk" were being used here on the forums in the same way as another much worse "n" word was and is used in real life. They were being used to keep people "in their place" and to try to shut people up.

These forums are about discussing video games and having a good time -- not about elitism or stratification. Using a code word that has the same function as words that most of us would never dare to say aloud in polite company is not a small thing, and in my opinion, deserves the banhammer.

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

Both words are retarded and overused. It also gives excuses to ban people who talk like they failed first grade literature and are obsessed with trash talking.

yeah, no matter what the word is, it's what it's used for that's bad. and people don't take to it lightly. they feel stupid. and they eventually slowly become less active. or just don't post things that could benefit some people. The Internet's about sharing information. so, anything purposely shutting people up from giving out any kind of info is bad.

Yeah.
This is why. At least you might be learning something, censoring yourself like that.

Foman basically summed it up. :D

Alienwolve, I agree with you, but next time don't use the word "retarded". I guess, its just me, but isn't that insulting to mentally handicapped people?

Also I noticed the same thing with acronyms as i said here :

Nonsense. Retarded no longer actually means "mentally handicapped" in this world.

Welcome to bungie.net. You have no rights. Play nice

People who use those words aren't following the play nice bit of that. Hence breaking the rules. And since they have no rights it's pretty hard to appeal it to a higher moderator. O and the moderators were the ones who made that rule in the first place so they'd all agree with th banning.

Here at bungie.net your lucky if you get banned by a moderator. Something that would give you a one week ban from a moderator can lead to 1 month if Achronos bans you.

Very well put.

I don't know, I kinda like Burger King. lol! sorry, that HAD to be said.

You see I get asked more about Burger King than anything else about the sticky. The reason being is that I know full well somebody would have started to use it to get around the rule. It is sad how we have to spell out some things, but we do.

Now we can do 14 day bans as well. Also if you think we a strict then you haven't seen anything. Achronos sees all that happens on this site. If you get his attention enough to have him step in then you are doomed. He will probably ban you until the year Reach gets glassed.

We blacklist them because it is an undesirable element that we do not wish to have. Now if they come back from their blacklisting and never do it again then the punishment worked. If they still wish to pursue that course of action well then they will be removed from the forums and never be allowed to return. Unlike Xbox Live where it takes a while to get banned here all it takes is just a few mouse clicks. It may seem like we are being harsh but in the end it helps to make a better place for all the members who wish to converse without fear of derision.

Pity in Australia we have to say Hungry Jacks instead of Burger King.

I like the ignorance clause added to the sticky. If it is indeed Recon who wrote that part, which is what I expect it is, then it will be one of the first times I have agreed with him on an issue.

I was never here for the "bad kid" season, so I had no idea what it meant until I just PM'd someone about it.
Its pretty stupid if you ask me.
I agree with TGP, i'm calling for "hj" to be the new acronym, I'm tempted to constantly use it and see what happens.

I've always found those "words" to be helpful. If I see somebody use them I know right away that I shouldnt waste my time trying to discuss anything with them.

Why do you have to be polite in society in general? Because it's civil and well...polite. People need to learn how to conduct themselves properly if they are to stand any chance of positively interacting with other members of the community. Using words such as these is usually harmless but it is not necessary and usually carries negative connotations.
