Okay, 720p natively isn't that shabby. Especially if you can get decent frame rates on limited hardware. But you mentioned a wonderful job of 1080p upscaling on the Elite, my guess due to the HDMI port and ANA2. Is that to say I won't be able to get the same upscaling with ANA and my component cables? Being a college student, money's already hard enough to come by, and dropping 3 grand on a 1080p projector is had enough, so finding the extra cash to upgrade to an elite is hard too, even though I'd love to have one of those sleek black boxes to match the projector.

Any Xbox 360 can play games at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. To play in 1080p, you need one of following:
1) A 1080p TV with 1080p capable component plugs - these are rare, most component inputs don't do 1080p. (This is what I do, as I do have a TV with component inputs that take 1080p)
2) A 1080p TV with a VGA input and the VGA Xbox cable.
3) A 1080p TV with an HDMI port and an Xbox 360 Elite.
In all cases, Halo 3 will be displaying upscaled 1080p (all Xbox 360s have the same nifty scaler) - as it is natively 720p. It looks good in 1080p, but it is very hard to tell the difference unless you're actively flipping resolutions or have a gigantic display.
If you already have a 360, the Elite is not really going to give you much more than more hard drive space unless your TV can only do 1080p through an HDMI port. And that's assuming you have a TV that can do 1080p in the first place, which most people don't have.
It's been my experience that you can't achieve a resolution of 1920x1080 over a VGA cable. I'm unsure of the standard, but the highest resolution I've been able to attain with a VGA cable [360's or otherwise] is the 16:10 resolution of 1680x1050. Thats why displays like the 30'' Apple Cinema require a video card with dual outputs, because their resolutions can't be obtained via one connection.
But if you can obtain 1080p output with a VGA cable, someone please instruct me as to what I'm doing incorrectly. As soon as I try to apply 1920x1080, My projector drops to the standby waiting for signal screen.
But this:

interests me. Any meaning the one I have. Was the mention of the Elite in the post nothing more than a plug? Because the way I see it this disagrees with that post:

...Halo 3 will display at 1080p through the Xbox Elite with its scaler and HDMI port, but not natively. We’ve seen it do just that and it looks utterly lovely....
And no doubt. Many of the games I have now I've seen upscaled magically, and it's those reasons I'm such a large fan of ANA. But the way this post is written, it leads me to think that I need an HDMI port, where as Achronos' post disagrees almost completely.
Just looking for some clarification! Thanks!
