I am talking about Disembodied Soul-type warnings that the moderators are able to send to users on the public forums. Would you want to see this option for group administrators/moderators in the private groups once they return?

Frankly, I'm on the fence about whether or not this would be a good option in groups. My personal leanings are towards "no," since I have generally seen the blacklisting feature heavily abused on some private groups and I can give you a 100% guarantee that a warning feature would be even more heavily abused. Just imagine getting into a small argument over... say... whether you like pie or cake on a private forum, and twenty minutes later finding 48 messages from Disembodied Soul in your inbox because one of the chapter's "mid-ranking moderators" is an immature user who not only likes cake, but also finds hitting the "warn" button repeatedly to be hilarious.

Moreover, groups are small enough that private messages can easily serve the same purpose. The purpose of warnings on the public forums (as I understand it) is to keep a running tally of how "bad" you've been lately. This is because there are so many users on the b.net forums, it's impossible to keep track of everybody. Things are very different in a private group.

For these reasons, I lean towards no. But I still see how it could be a useful feature in some ways -- especially in huge groups like the Marty Army and others. Also, it just seems cool to be able to generate a message from DS. But are these reasons good enough to counterbalance the negatives?

What are your thoughts or opinions on giving "warnings" in private groups?

I think you've got your answer right there.

For large groups, it'd be impossible to keep track of everything with PMs. they serve too vague of a purpose. but for anything under a hundred, or even more, that would be fine.

But for the 'yes' side, I think it would be a cool feature. helpful in large groups. awesome to look at, if it's not abused. and just because it can be doesn't mean it shouldn't be added, although it's not a bad to use caution. anyway, what if we could choose the title or avatar to go with the warnings, or a specific user's account? that'd be cool, maybe by default the founder.

i'm definitely leaning towards 'no' as well.

Well, seeing as you could just send them a warning yourself and then document it some place where your moderators could see (such as an article only visible to moderators), I would say no.

yes, that's actually true. Articles were very useful in that way. also news pages, even better, since regular members can only see the intro post. and mods can still post about it.

If they did allow warnings in groups, the soul will be very pissed off.

I'm guessing the decision would come down to how mean Achronos wants to be..

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I hope the warning feature is not ported over to group admins and mods. As many of you have noted in this thread, there would probably be a lot of abuse. If a user had 30 Soul warnings issued from admins and mods in their groups, they'd be more inclined to ignore the warnings we send on the public forums. If those warnings were ignored, they would be all but pointless anyway.

So, in order for the warnings to have the same impact on the public forums as they do now, they should only be a public forum issue. A group warning feature would more or less negate their effectiveness over all.

I'd quite like to see it, but it'd only serve about 5-6 groups in its intended purpose, the rest would just abuse it. Those groups it'd serve well are usually well-moderated anyway, so simply to save Achronos and co. work, i'd have to say no.

I would imagine that group warnings (if any) would need to come via an entity other than The Disembodied Soul (perhaps from Skip Weasel?). The Soul is a fearsome being and should not to be toyed with.

Are you saying Skip Weasel is a wuss? How dare you sir. Also do you still have the news story with him in it? I am not sure many people know who Skip Weasel is.

Dang, I searched for it but it's not there anymore. It used to be available at this link: http://bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?story=ArchivedStory60 but it seems to be gone. Oh well. BobBQ described Skip Weasel as follows:

Posted by: BobBQ
Skip Weasel is/was an intern at Bungie Studios. He's the guy with the red baseball cap who appears in some of the older Bungie Comics.

--Sgt. Smith notes that Skip was reportedly fifteen years old. Lucky bastard.

More on topic, though, I think that evilcam had a fantastic point above. If people in groups started getting periodic warnings from Disembodied Soul, they'd certainly be much less likely to assign them the weight and force that they should have in the public forums. Yet another good argument against assigning DS the extra added duty of presiding over the groups, even though he probably deserves it.
