I'm wondering what the advantages are of IdealScience's forum system over the more widely used vBulletin forums. I've seen almost exclusive use of the vB software through my browsing and it is very fluid and fuctional.

So, why has Bungie gone with this one?

(Note: If you have no idea what I'm talking about look at the bottom right of the forum page. http://www.idealscience.com/site/default.aspx )
And here's the vB url: http://www.vbulletin.com/

Something along the lines of the fact that vBulletin would implode under the sheer usage and IdealScience would not.

I don't think so, there are some very very high traffic sites that use vBulletin, such as somethingawful, and they manage fine. That said, its not as high traffic as B.net, and the only way to find out if it would handle this amount of traffic is to use it.

Aside from that, before the new new hawtness, i'd have loved for a switch to Vbulletin, but with the massive improvements to navigation and the looks of the forum, i actually prefer this forum now :D.

vBulletin can't do handle the usage or all the information on here. With the stats and everything, vBulletin would implode.

and the Ideal science boards are a lot more customizable then the vBulletin ones.

ASP.Net (Which is what IBB is written in) is like a formula F1 car.
PHP (Which is what vB is written in) is like a golf cart.

Have I not seen this topic like....1000 times here before?

IdaelSciences let bungie build a custom forum system to test the software.

It was a mutual backscratching.

Yeah basically Bungie is able to do a lot more with Ideal Science's software like create groups and such.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I'm sorry but I absolutely HATE vBulletin whenever I see it. It's horrible. I use the b.net forums almost exclusively now and at least some of it is because of the ease of use.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Search function please. Ideal Science is used because it's about 10 times better, allows many things that vBulletin would not be able to handle, and because vBulletin would not be able to handle the activity (remember all the chapters? Yeah...).

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

From what I understand, Ahoronos was looking for a board that could be customized to meet his specification for all the extensions he wanted. Apparently, he shopped around for a little while, and found that Ideal Science could do just that. He wanted to continue to use ASP.NET as the source code, and he wanted the extensions to be totally customizable. Ideal Science worked with him to do just that, and this board is the result. At least, I think that's the gist of it.

Although I'm very biased, I'm happy with the results. I probably would have not come by as often if this was yet another PHP board, because I'm not really a fan of those. Also, this board meshes well with the framework the web-team developed for this site. Everything is smooth, and pretty. I doubt that vbulletin could accomplish even a fraction of what this board is capable of.
