It uses your XBOX LIVE account that you already have.Games for windows and XBOX Live use the same account so you just sign in and there you go...or so i believe but i don't have Vista yet.

Wate so if I don't have an xbox 360 live account I have to buy one on Windows live, I wanna buy the game but if they expect me to pay more money to play multiplayer online, forget about it, or can I just create account on windows live for free.

It is people like you that make people like me need medication.

No you can simply make a free silver account. With Silver accounts you will still be able to play Halo 2 Vista along with any other Games for Windows live games.

ok, so it would cost money to get a gold account, and what would a gold account do that silver can't.

ON the PC side the difference is this.

Gold will have access to matchmaking and multiplayer achievements. Silver won't. Other then that not much else.

Nonetheless, you still need to make an account, Gold or Silver, if you want to play online. Many PC gamers aren't used to making a profile that's going to be their persistent online identity. Hell, I think Halo 2 and other future Games for Windows titles may force you to make a profile instead of allowing you to just jump in and play. Ironically, that would contradict one of the very core aspects of the GFW marketing campaign--making PC games more accessible and mainstream.

Good thing you only have to make the Live account once, and that will follow you across all online games so you don't have to keep on making profiles and such. I think I might have just contradicted myself.

What about if you got banned from one service? Would it apply to both Windows Live and Xbox Live? Or just for the one?

That's quite interesting, probably both.

Keep in mind that if you cheat in Halo 2 on matchmaking (stand-bying, abusing exploits, etc.), you will only get blocked from playing matchmaking, you can still play custom games and other titles besides Halo 2 on Live.

It's better to think of them as one service now. Live is no longer Xbox live. They are the same service but running on two different platforms. So if you get your Gamertag banned from live it would be across both.
