Subject: Groups are back... but what's new?

I can remember a certain someone saying something along the lines of "we're removing groups and we're not putting them back until they're done right". Well, the new Groups still pretty much look the same. The only thing I notice, besides the new lay-out is that it shows larger, more popular groups in the Community Home. Other than that, it seems nothing notable has changed.

Am I missing something? What's new? If there is, I can't see it. Achronos?

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I don't think it used to say whether a group was open or closed. Nothing else new that is obvious, however, Achronos had mentioned that this may happen and that new features would be implemented in later up-dates.

Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure that the groups displayed are there are there based upon number of members. It makes me sad that some of the groups whose sole purpose was member count are being acknowledged.

Who cares? Groups are back, yaaaaay!

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

There isn't anything new. We made them more discoverable (search works better, highly active groups are exposed on the community page automatically).

There are a few features we want to add, but in the interests of bringing them back sooner, we just mostly did a straight up conversion. Most of the rest of the year of my time is going to be spent on making cool Halo 3 features, so my time for groups will be very limited. However, you guys can help justify time spent (and thus groups get better) by using them. At last check, only 6000 or so people used groups. That number needs to go up for us to justify the continued work to maintain and improve the groups. Hopefully, by making them more discoverable, with a better UI, that will help.

Oh, and we know the themes are somewhat limited right now, we'll eventually post a themebuilder and instructions for submittal, so all you artists out there can try and get a Theme Master title.

Did you even read the post I just made?

I thought you said we can create our own layouts for the groups? Well, where is that feature?

  • 05.02.2007 12:12 PM PDT

Thank you to yourself and the team Mr. Achronos. Bungie.net just felt empty without the groups-like half of the community was missing. I could really care less about a whole bunch of extra features. Sooner is better. :)

Awesome news about Themebuilding as well.

Major bug. You guys didn't test groups in Opera did you =[. Specifically with submitting news. The text area for the body areas doesn't show up.

How could you miss it?

Uh, because Opera is not a supported browser of this site (IE 6, 7, Firefox 1.5 and 2, and Safari with some limitations are supported). Opera gets a light test pass.

If you have a bug with Opera, report it ASAP to bnetbugs@microsoft.com.

Group button problem.

As you can see, the 'Groups' link is behind the search feature. Is this just me, or Firefox?

To match along with the "Friends online" and "Message Center", could the groups get an icon next to them? It'd look cleaner, in my opinion.. Very awesome, though. I can't wait for new themes from people, as well as new features, if that will happen. :P

Alright, thanks for the input :]

I'd have to agree with Zaggles, an icon up there would be nice.

Also, in a thread earlier, Stosh said he'd be working on getting some new skins for the groups. So the current limited design choices shouldn't last relatively long.

Thanks a lot for all your hard work, Achronos :)

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

I made two new groups and played around with the settings. Its pretty cool what you get and how it works, IMO. Alot better than before except for the lack of user ranks.

I think something "Groups are back!"-related on the front page news would help stir up some more activity.
