Hey all I'm looking to upgrade my current video card for Halo 2 Vista.

Sorry if this topic kind of topic has been posted before but I would like to make the right purchase. Bear with me as I am a novice when it comes to computers.

I'm looking at 2 cards right now to buy. The 8600 GTS 256 MB or the 7950 GT 512.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=445&card2=5 12

Here are the side by side, I really don't know how to read those specs so any help would be great. Thanks.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Preferably the one you want.

Those cards don't suck. Any card that can max crysis(8800gtx) is beyond awesome. 8600 should work wonders.

Don't be sorry to ask. You are one of the few people to ask a question worth answering.

Thanks appreciate the help.

Anyways if I ever feel the need to upgrade to the 8800 GTS, theres always the EVGA Step-Up Program.

No, the 8800 GTX can't max crysis, the Crytek stated that two of them in SLi wont max it either as they are going for longevity and they want you to be able to pick up a new card years from and discover even more details. More or less.

No... 1 gtx can. Sli is just overkill, even for Crysis.

No one should SLI a high end card, the motherboard will slow it down so bad that you are better off with a medium end card.

No, you are incorrect. Ding!

The fact of the matter is that it has always been this way with PC games though.

That's funny I recall crytek stating 1 gtx can max it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1MyQAKOT8Y Proof that YOU sir, are wrong.
if u get an 8600 and try tp play crisis with it, u will get an unplayable fps, guranteed. if u want a dx10 card that will last, get an 8800gts 320mb, they are a litte more money, but are worth it in current proformance, and next-gen proformance. um.... the minumim card I think is a 6200.

That's odd, I heard that Crysis brought dual 8800s to their knees maxed out.

It's good to see that an amazing-looking game like that won't require as much as I thought it would.

Yeah, it is nice. Crytek has done very well. I just wish that people who were technologically "challenged", wouldn't try to act like experts.

That Crysis video is truly amazing!

Well thanks for the replies everyone and mostly Pancho.

I think I will get the 8600 GTS for Halo 2 Vista and later on in 2 or 3 months I will use EVGA's STEP UP program to get a 8800 GTS for Crysis.

Thanks again.

No problem. Make sure to upgrade to the 8800GTX if you want those settings. GTS will run it ok, but you migh need to lower some settings depending on the rest of your hardware.

for crisis? well im not sure if there si a released min gpu spec out yet. im actually not sure if crisis supports dx9 either, it might be dx10 only. im really not into crisis, so idk this stuff. but for any decent settings (on dx10 mind u, and a native resolution) u will not get a playable fps.

6200 is a dx9 card, so it can't run dx10. Yes, Crysis supports dx9 and 10. But yes, they I think have an estimated minimum req. They say at minimum, Crysis looks like Farcry.

im sure u are going to get crisis so u can play it thru looking like farcry. farcry was beautiful, but crisis is just a dx10 showoff. that is the one game where it actually matters to max the settings out.

if u play crisis , then u might as well get an 8800gtx right now, and just grab another for sli later, cus u will need them.

that demo was also tailored for that prerelase g80 (i think it was a gtx, not sure), so it shows none of the demand that crisis will have upon release. i doubt it will run that well after they polish the game itself up, and whatnot.

I'm just saying, you don't need a killer card to run Crysis. SLI now? Right now, gtx sli will be bottlenecked by pretty much all the advanced hardware. By the time the sli gtx's won't be bottlenecked, there will be a better card out. So no, doing sli now is a bad idea. The g80 was released then, not prereleased. REAL TIME! So it does show what it can do. That's just alpha, they'll have it running even smoother once it's out. Why would they release a video promising a gtx maxing out Crysis, if it won't? That would be a terrible move.

GeForce 8600 GTS.
It is far better in performance. And yes, it is able to run Crysis.
