Today, Bungie has committed another racist act against the Community in not allowing people outside of The United States and Canada to enter their emblem design contest. SInce this is the second time Bungie has done this, I thought it would be a good idea to bring this topic up for discussion.

The first time Bungie showed signs of racism was with the Halo 3 Beta entrance stipulations. U.S. citizens were offered a multitude of ways into the beta, such as signing up on Halo3.com etc., but there were only a limited amount of entries available to people outside of the U.S., and those lucky few who did get in were reduced to writing a seven word description on how the Chief would finish the fight (or something like that). I don't know what Bungie was thinking, but what they did was discriminate against non-Americans.

Now, Bungie has once again discriminated against members of its Community (non-Americans/non-Canadians) who should have a fair chance to enter Bungie's contest. Bungie staff, moderators, and normal members frequently speak out against elitism, but Bungie is encouraging it within its own Community by repeatedly discriminating against members on the basis of race.

Before these two events above, has Bungie ever committed any other racist acts that I am unaware of? What should be done to encourage Bungie to stop this kind of behavior? Bungie fanboys can turn a blind eye to these racist acts that Bungie has committed, but that will only make this situation worse in the future. I am not trying to incite anything negative here; I am only trying to encourage discussion over this matter. What should the Community do to show that it does not approve of Bungie's actions?

I wouldn't call it racist.

I'd call it... not wanting to deal with foreign people.

  • 05.02.2007 2:06 PM PDT

I'm not that active, but never dead.

It's called Nationalism, not racism.
It's called the laws of the country Bungie operates in, not their own choices.
There's one more thing....and it's called lack of knowledge. You have it. You should fix it.

don't be a -blam!- moron.

Read the thread that's in the appropriate area.

The only reason the contest is limited to the US/Canada is the amount of legal -blam!- bungie would have to go through to set up a contest valid in those territories and Europe.

May I ask how you think Bungie identifies peoples' race?

You say tomato; I say potato.

Is this guy serious? I can't tell.

I have an idea, since we don't want Bungie to have the appearence of harboring Nationalism, let's just NOT have a contest?

Or, how about a contest that North Americans aren't allowed in?

Umm, what race are you referring to? There's the human race. I suppose they don't allow the canine race to participate, so yes, they could be seen as racist. Although the more common definition of racism is people of different skin tones, they are allowing people of different skin tones in the contest, so that isn't exactly racism. I'm not sure what word you're looking for, but it isn't racism.

If you don't got it, you want it. If you got it, you want more of it. Of course if you don't know what it is, it's hard to get any in the first place.

Because, you know, all them peoples on continents other than North America aren't human.

I wonder if that elephant that paints is in the U.S? I wonder if he could enter. I know there are some chimps in the U.S. that do paintings. I so want an elephant or a chimp painted emblem now.

Bungie is being racist here I think. They are discriminating against Africans, for example. Most Africans live in Africa. Therefore, in general, Bungie is being racist. They're not discriminating against all Africans, just most of them. Is that alright? No. They're doing this against Chinese people, Japanese people, etc. I'm with the OP here, Bungie has overstepped the line this time.

Love you Bungie!
Still playing Halo1 Custom Edition!

Not only do they again leave europe away, but also they leave QUEBEC away! One of the founding father of Canada, representing no less than 25% of the country's population!
Reminds me: the beta was limited to the US, but bungie said that some europe would get a chance in. that chance was handled by the XCN. the XCN selected network sites and gave them 100 invites to give in contests. I won in one of those contests however, XCN has decided it no longer needed to give the beta to european XCN websites.

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

Way to exaggerate your issues. Bungie is in no way being racist and the fact that you're claiming this is just stupid.

There is obviously some regrettable reason that they have not specified. And like everything else that's nonspecific in these updates, people fly off the deep end on the unexplained. If you had instead asked for the reason, you'd not look at all silly and simply concerned.

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

If you actually go check out the new story thread, you will a post by Frankie explaining that this is due to legal issues. They're not being racist in any way and neither are any other parties involved. I suggest you get your facts straight before wrongfully accusing Bungie of such a horrific thing.

They are a family...technically 'canidae'.

That is very true, and while the OP did not elaborate, by reading between the lines I see what he means. Frankie may have given the reason of "legal issues" to answer questions about why the contest is not open outside of the U.S. and Canada, but the question is, what are these "legal issues"? Did Frankie elaborate? No, and I doubt that he ever will. This gives the impression that there is something else behind this decision. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything, but would Bungie admit to racism if they did believe in it? No. So there is no way of absolutely knowing if Bungie is being racist in this case or not. I would tend to say yes because of the Halo 3 Beta incident. Bungie was blatantly being racist there, they withheld entry into the Beta from most non-Americans and paraded this fact out in the open. So why should we believe that Bungie is not also being racist in this case? There's more evidence of apparent racism in this case with the contest than there is against it.

As I said before, I am aware of the legal issue they are talking about in Quebec and that is NO reason to keep a contest out.

Yes the set of law here is different, but my knowledge of what we call the Consumer Protection Office( OPC in French) Basically rules out unfair contests and things that wuold actually be meant to jip us. For an example, the Jip that's been going on Ebay about people paying with stolen credit cards, well, the OPC Took stand and denied eBay the right to take back cash as the "disclaimer" you have to accept to join is too long and too complicated to ever be read.

Now if M$ Denies us acces in the contest, reasons can be many. From my knowledge However, unless M$ intended to steal from us something not correctly written in the rules( wich are deemed to be short enought to be read), then there's no reason to block the acces apart from lazyness to check the law themselves. Many contests are valid here and elsewhere but it's mostly only M$ that does it. The contests such as "Win a 360 every Hour" Did happen here, but it's because it was someone else that was in charge.
