Frankie, Aaron, Zoe,
What an excellent idea! Simple, yet so very, very effective. I'm amazed this hasn't been thought of long before, and I'm sure this method of showing screenshots will fast become an online standard. It seems such a perfect and, in hindsight, obvious use of the QTVR technology. Being so much more immersive and informative than regular 2D screenshots, they're not only brilliant for capturing the dynamic action of a game but are also ideal for demonstrating the various features of the game engine.
I'm sure you've chased the idea round and round by now, but for what it's worth, my only suggestion would be to add elevation control. Obviously this adds significantly to the total number of screenshots, but for us broadband users, it would add an nice extra level of depth. It would only need to be a hemisphere of coverage, as there wouldn't be much to see below ground level! Much like this example: http://www.apple.com/hardware/gallery/pmac_sept2003_480.html
Will you be building the 3D Screenshot capturing functionality into the PC release? That would be an amazing tool.
My only reservation is that by unveiling this concept, you've now pushed back Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 by another couple of months as their developers rush to implement this feature!
Much kudos and many thanks.
