I work for the Department of Defense.

Achronos has said it many times, But what makes a member "Active"

A post avg of 1/day?

Or... One log-on to bungie per day?

And does group activity attribute to this "Active"-ness?

It's a user that posts often on bungie.net without disobeying the rules.

Whenever I think of an "Active Member" I think of someone who posts frequently.. However, I'm pretty sure Achronos rarely says "Active" member, but instead uses the words "Contributing" and "Helpful", which are far more important and don't necessarily have to be the same as "Active".

I don't think rules have anything to do with activity in a literal sense. Activity must be relatively active in posting, contributing in others ways etc probably at least once a day (probably more) as most people would maybe post several posts per day here.

What about those who come to the forums multiple times a day and often have nothing to say? Most topics now have many people saying the same thing over and over again. I consider myself active even though I might only post about five times a week.

The general definition of and active member is a member that posts alot.

a few variations of it are:

A good avtive member, member that posts alot and follows rules.
A contributing active member, is actively contributing to the group, even if they don't post.
The overall good active member member, the average member that contributes and all ways when ever he/she can.
And finally The best active member ever, a member of the group who actively contibutes to the group, posts 100 times every day, makes threads, obeys rules, and gives the leader $20 every day jsut because hes awesome, a.k.a the perfect member. Most of the time the admin him/herself.

Hope that helps

Personally, i'd say someone who's been a member for a certain length of time (1-2 months) and contributes daily.

Of course, you could be active and not contribute, but that'd just be a lurker.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Lol, I wonder if blacklistings take you out of the running...

Live killa, you raise an interesting point. This is actually a question that I have been thinking about in the back of my head for a couple of weeks.

I know that there are many people who visit these forums and "lurk," reading posts and maybe even spending hours on bungie.net every day, but never posting. I know this because this was something that I did for over a year before I actually signed up for a bungie.net account.

The conclusion that I've come to is that there are four categories of users here:

1) Being an "active" member almost by definition requires posting. To be considered "active" in my opinion, it must be a member who contributes information, creates posts that generate replies, or gives his agreement or disagreement to new ideas.
2) A member who never posts but just reads is a "passive" member. In other words, he lets others create information (or disinformation, depending on the poster) and then lets that information come to him.
3) A member who has an account here but never logs in is an "inactive member."
4) A person who visits the forums but does not have an account an cannot log in is a "visitor."

But how many posts are required to be active? How do you actually define the number of posts that are required? One post per day? One post per week? One post per month? A very loose and vague definition of "active" might be something along the lines of, "A member who has contributed -- positively or negatively -- to the discourse on the forums recently."

But that hardly lets a person know whether they are active or passive (or inactive). The problem is that we can come up with more specific definitions if we want to try to (post once a day, post once a week, logs in once a month, or whatever), and indeed some of us do have perfectly valid opinions on exactly how many posts-per-time-period are required to be considered "active."

But these are all just our opinion. The definition of "active" must vary from website to website and is never the same. For this reason, the only opinion that matters is that of the administration of this site.

In terms of the Halo 3 F&F Beta (which I assume this question relates to), the decision of what constitutes a "forum regular" was hopefully made by Achronos, exactly as it should have been. There is no hard and fast definition of either an "active member" or a "forum regular" that can apply universally, and thus the decision must be made by the head guy in charge. If he did make the decision, I doubt that he'll ever tell us his opinion of what he constitutes to be a "forum regular" (helps to avoid people spamming the site just to "keep their activity up" in case there's ever another similar gift to the Community like the F&F Beta), but as long as he has a solid definition in his head, then there's no problem.

P.S.
(I think that anybody who might be reading this thread looking for clues as to exactly how often they should post to be considered "active" or "regular" is taking the absolute wrong course of action. Do not count how many times you post -- post when and where you want to, if you want to. I do not think that anybody should be trying to keep their activity up just for the sake of keeping their activity up.)

I agree with you foman, I will gladly take on the passive member label. Through two accounts I have been apart of the community since 2003, and while I was extremely active in the beginning up to just before the site was upgraded, these past two years I have become passive and find I have less interest in the ongoing topics, and not much to say about others. Thats not to say I don't like it here, it is just that with so many members now it is hard to have a unique opinion and not say something that has been repeated many times over.

I agree with this entirely, don't post to post, post when a post is required in a sense. For the community, not your self. If you want to be active, go jog a mile. It is not about being active it is about being here for the community when needed etc

Edit: It's also about voicing opinions and sharing with the community.

I'm not that active, but never dead.

Another thing to remember that a certian number of posts per day is pointless of the posts themselves are pointless. Quality is always better than quantity.

If you invite me to your group you will be blocked.

I think Activeness relates only to how much you post. Contributing, however, relates to how useful your posts are. Useful can be a huge range of things, like comic relief to heated debates.
