I need some advice.

I am planning to get an HIS x1650 AGP. This is one right here. This card has 256MB of GDDR2 RAM. However, for just $20 more, I could get this. It is the same exact card, but with 512MB of GDDR2 RAM. Is this really worth it? I hear that with the 128 bit memory interface, the card cannot even use the full 512MB.

And on a completely seperate topic: Would I be any better off with a completely different card for games such as F.E.A.R. and HL2? The most I want to spend is $120.

Well if it's only $20 more...

True, but no point in spending $20 for something pointless.

Well, if you ever decide to sell your card for some reason, it will have more value. And I have an x1600 (mobility radeon) and it plays FEAR and HL2 just fine on relatively high settings.

EDIT: Oh ya and don't waste too much money on an AGP port, they're already out of date nowadays and you won't be able to get a better card in the future.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

You use an AGP interface? But do you plan on upgrading after that, like within a fewmonths or a year?

you will not see any performance enhancement past 256 megs of ram on a gpu. the 512 is there just for price tag issues. you see it is human (mainly male [and this is a male dominated market]) tendency to want things that are bigger, thats y the titanic got its name. but the main things you want to look at are the piplines the processor on the card and all the other specifications on the card. so to answer your question no you wont see much diffrence (if any) between the 2 unless something has changed recently and cards need more ram. my knowledge on game vid card ram requirements are a year or 2 old.

on your 2nd question: for 120$ that prob would be your best bet but i dont know many cards in that range (last time i shopped for a card i was looking @ the 8800 series and the ati 1900's so didnt look @ those cards.) but a good site to find out it CNET they do card comparisons so you can see for yourself what card will fit your needs.

hope this helps

Thanks guys. After doing a bit of research, this article came up. It is pretty long, but a good read. Maybe a 512MB Card is worth $20 more after all...

Sup, I'm (ES)Kenshin, the leader of the (ES)Clan and an admin on the (ES)Clan dedicated server on H2V.
Halo Custom Edition - 1,419 Hours.
Halo 2 Vista - 257 Hours and counting.

The 256MB card is the default setup for the X1600 and X1650, they also come in a 512MB version which doesnt really give a big boost, the extra 256MB only comes into play if you max out your existing 256MB. This is very unlikely due to the card was orig. designed around 256MB and shouldnt exceed that 256MB.
