It is clear that the current system of choosing moderators is flawed. Achronos trusts the moderators to recommend new candidates for moderator positions to him. However, the moderators represent such a minority on this site that it is in question whether or not the moderators are capable of choosing new moderators without only serving their own selfish needs. Therefore, a change is needed.
All Bungie.net members should have a say in who gets to become a moderator. The question of how can be answered with the upcoming karma system that Achronos claims to be working on. Every member should have a "popular support" rating that is visible to all members. Other members can then vote for or against any member they choose. A percentage can then be displayed of the other members supporting said member. For example, a user that has one person against them and two people for them would have a popular support rating of approximately 67%.
Now how can this help to choose moderators? Well when a member's popular support rating gets high enough, to I'd say about 85% with a signifcant number of votes (say 1000) then that member is automatically made a moderator due to public demand. But what if that member starts to go crazy with his new power? Members will be allowed to change their stance on members in order to keep them in check. If a moderator's popular support rating drops below say 60% then that moderator will lose his powers.
This same method can also help get rid of unwanted users. If a member's rating drops below a certain number, about 10% with at least 1000 votes, then that member will be automatically permanently banned from the forums.
Higher popular support ratings can also lead to higher ranks, such as becoming a Master Forum Ninja once one has reached 95%, and becoming a Superuser when one's rating has reached around 98%. When a member becomes a Superuser, he is above the rules and cannot be banned.
I sincerely hope that Bungie implements this wonderful idea as it would help keep unruly members in check and will create a better selection process for moderators.
