Within the first 10 minutes someone will undoubtedly upload a picture of their own ass. It's a privilege we will never have, unless by some chance you become a mod.

No doubt. But as I said, things like that will happen... it just a matter of how hard to controle it gets.

  • 05.08.2007 4:39 PM PDT

Nah, theres too many people to keep control over. Leave it the way it is. Besides, the avatars bungie offers are really neat anyway.

On most sites where you can set up your own personal profile you are allowed to upload your own avatar.
You obviously can't on Bnet and they tell us why in the FAQ
We are not allowing custom avatars because inevitably it creates too many problems. Like it or not, plenty of people will upload things that are obscene, offensive and in violation of our code of conduct. We would then have to constantly police all of these files and spend all of our time making sure nobody was doing anything wrong. There's also the risk that certain files could break the site or cause unexpected behavior.

I think it still deseves a try to see if it will work. I know that on other site I use the avatar to help identify a person. In ones that I am active in I look at the picture to see if I know him/her from previous threads. It also helps give the feeling that everyone on Bnet is a different person and less so that they are just some faceless person in the forums.

Sure there would be rules established and people would break them, just like in the forums, but if not too many people do so it can be controlled. And if it runs out of controle, I think the privilage should be taken away.

Post what you voted for and your resoning.

First off, no. Never. Not gonna happen. And if it does, I truly have lost faith in this community, and will thus, leave.

On most sites where you can set up your own personal profile you are allowed to upload your own avatar.

That's your problem right there. This is not most sites. Nor will it ever be 'most' sites.

That is who we are, faceless people. It is like this to not give us too much freedom. We are not allowed to upload avatars simply because it would not work. Over half of this community is very immature. Trust me, I was once part of that very large group.

Sure there would be rules established and people would break them, just like in the forums, but if not too many people do so it can be controlled. And if it runs out of controle, I think the privilage should be taken away.
Then why have something when it will be taken away?

I wouldn't mind :] (not to be taken seriously in any way)

In all seriousness, this idea has been thought of so many times and it would just not do. The issue (as stated above) is that there is too much of a risk that inappropriate images would be uploaded and shown to everyone on Bungie.net. It is much like the -blam!- filter, anything inappropriate is not allowed here on Bungie.net, and it is imposible to make a -blam!- filter for images unless they were selected and monitered manually by a member of the web team, and that would require to much unnecessary time taken from the web team. As Achronos has said plenty a time, the use and creation of custom avatars shall never be allowed to a 'member' of Bungie.net.

Edit: Clarification.

Custom avatars have one main drawback: (it's not the possible abuse)

They would take away from the awesomeness of the Moderators (excluding TGP's) avatars. If we all could have had glowing red eye avatars, there would have been no reason to fear Shishka. I think you all understand.

You say tomato; I say potato.

If I remember correctly, Recon had a post involving the reward system achronos mentioned. I also recal someone mentioning custom avatars as an earnable reward.

Although I have been waiting (kinda) patiently for someone to finally update the emblems so people wouldn't think I'm dumb. (thanks)

If you really want a custom avatar, link your Gamertag. Nobody else on Bungie has my particular Gamer Symbol, and most people can identify you by this.

Yep, same here! I agree with this... uniqueness is no problem with over 100 avatars to choose from and 214 million potential different Halo 2 emblems as your avatar. Why do you need the ability to upload a picture when being unique is no problem?
