Whoa wasn't expecting a new announcement for a Halo book just about what, 7 months after Ghosts of Onyx. I thought Nylund was doing the rest of the books. But I bet Joey did a great job, I didn't even see this story till after the Weekly Update. Can't wait thanks guys.

P.S - Don't you think it may be a bad idea to release the new novel and Halo 3 around the same time? I mean people are going to be somewhat pre-occupied with the best game of the year, so couldn't it be a bad time to release it?

Yay! New Halo book!

Over the last few years I’ve been helping with the fiction on a number of external projects including the Halo film and Ensemble Studios’ “Halo Wars.”
Wait, he said he's been helping with the halo film. I thought that was cancelled. (or has Bungie secretly resurrected it?)

It was surely about time bungie thought rightly. i tried very hard to figure out why the halo novels in the first place were not written by the actual guys that birthed the story from scratch. and from what i've read Joe's one of these guys. It is only the originator of a thing that can skilfully handly the darn thing. I can bet everyone that this is gonna make the best Halo novel thus far.

WOO! lol, I've read every Halo novel multiple times, and I am currently reading The Fall of Reach again for a school project and writing a novel of my own. If Mr. Staten is anything like Eric Nylund, he can rest assured that I will buy and enjoy his book.

I can't take the pressure of waiting for H3 and the new book to come out!!!!! Hopefully its timed perfectly so I can finish the book just before the game is released, just makes playing it that much more exciting. Nylund did an amazing job and I'm sure Mr. Staten will do just fine. A little off topic but I haven't been this excited for a book series since all the sequels to ENDERS GAME if any of you remember that book

Sgt. Johnson in all of the halo games is like sixty plus years old right?

There's something I don't understand about this book...

The Halo and Halo 2 plots take place 30 years after first contact and defeat of Harvest. If Johnson was at Harvest as a Staff Sargeant, why is he a Sargeant in Halo? And if he's been in for 30 years (heck, even 20!) then why is he still a Sargeant (or Staff Sargeant)? This man should be a Master Gunnery Sargeant or Sargeant Major at that point, assuming he isn't discharged for so much time in service with such a low rank comparatively.

in other words, 'wtf?!'

by the way, I know today's junior Marines have it a little easier and more laid back than our hardened superiors, but I didn't think that trend would continue to the point we're calling them Sarge. What a shame...

the book does sound like it'll be a good one, but i'd rather read one that picks up after ghosts of onyx.

Good luck with the new Halo novel.

I also have a question for Joe Staton, do you still have Dragonfly Halo Game Flipz book I sent you 3 years ago? It was a 5" x 7" version of the Halo 2 preview trailer. I'm hoping it wasn't lost in the mail.

Thanks.

So early teens+30 years makes the Chief at least 40 years old. Has his age been established elsewhere in the fiction?

well the books say in 2523 the SPARTANS were no older than 12. So in 2525 he was 14; 27 years later, in 2552 when the events at HALO took place, he was 41. hope it answers your question=]

this new book sounds okay about johnson, but id rather they keep the storyline flowing and not go backwards in time. maybe they could throw in some flashbacks that relate to his past (very cool) and what happened in harvest but i think they should pick up where ghosts of onyx left off. they cant leave us hanging like that (like wtf happened to john in ghosts of onyx? and wth happened to "gray team" a team of spartans sent "far out of UNSC controlled space years ago but have not come back"??) esp. when this coming book HAS NO SPARTANS IN IT (the dude said so in his interview). while the covenant and UNSC forces provide background characters, the spartans are at the center of the plot. what kind of HALO book has no SPARTANS?!
