Another one of these, my answer is Halo 2. No offense to anyone here but Halo 2 > Halo 1. The graphics were better, the AI, the vehicles, the amount of sick weapons, the multiplayer, legendary was more of a challenge, and lets not forget the new features like dual-wielding and boarding
I don't even know where to start, that's how wrong I consider you to be.
Don't be hating dude, you know most of that is true. I may be wrong about the weapons (that Halo 1 pistol was sick!) and even the mutiplayer (cheaters, you know), but the graphics, AI, and legendary were all better in Halo 2. Lets not forget new abilites in Halo 2.
You ARE wrong about the weapons - all of the new weapons were not 'sick'. BR and carbine were good, but ALL the duals are worthless, innaccurate spray weapons, the shotgun shot foam pellets, the pistol was pointless - what gun can't kill another player with whole clip?! - the sentinal beam was interesting, but weak and pointless. The beam rifle and sword were good additions, but the sword pissed off more people than it pleased.
The graphics were more advanced, we got higher levels of detail and interesting light effects, but they were also muddy, glitchy and unpolished compared to Halo's. The environments were all smaller, the mission paths more linear, with less enemies on screen at any time. The AI? The AI is better in halo 2 how? It isn't really better. Elites jump from behind cover onto boxes whenever they get near one, even if it means their certain death, the Flood was now a Trickle, and the brutes were just aggressive damage sponges. Little improvement there. Dual wielding offered novelty at the expense of substance - it impacted the whole weapon system for the worse. Sure, now you can play around with different gun combinations - but the trade-off is those guns are half as powerful as they were before. So, while good for some variety, overall it did not make the game better.
Legendary was more of a challenge - let's say that legendary was more difficult. More difficult does not mean better. Legendary mode was less a test of skill, and more a test of memorizing enemy spawns, hoarding the noob combo, persistence and luck. In halo 1 leg., you could play like rambo if you had the skill. In halo 2 leg, no matter how skilled you are you are limited in what you can do. There's rewarding challenge, and there's frustrating challenge.
The whole campaign was inferior to halo 1s campaign. Some people point to the story having more layers, which is very true, but I don't remember that enhancing the gameplay at all.
Boarding - great.
You see, overall, halo 2 is a great game (don't get me wrong, I love it) but it really didn't carry on some of the best things started by it's predecessor. It could have been better. Thank god for the absolutely incredible multiplayer interface, which could NOT have been better. So when we compare halo 1 and 2, you have to consider that for a game that was a whole 3 years newer, it didn't bring a lot to the table besides the great XBL interface and replacing the problems of the first with it's own. The core values were not so hot, especially when you appreciate what made the first one good.
