(EDIT) I got my answer, thanks for the help guys. I had missed 'allow old xbox games on live' in the setup.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

My youngest son's 360 is not letting him play Halo 2 on live. (Don't criticize; he is not allowed to use a mic, and plays honorably and adequately!)

What happens is, as soon as Halo 2 boots, and you choose to sign in, a message pops up,

"You have an important message from XBox Live. Would you like to go to account management in the Xbox dashboard?"

You can either go into management or continue offline. Account management has no message, and the account is active, up to date, and we can play Gears on Live no problem, it is a Halo only issue.

Help, the poor kid is having to use his old regular xbox to play, plus we are short a machine for when friends come over.

Razor9344, that was it, thank you so much.

I must have missed that when I went through the set up originally.

Ok I had this problem too. You need to go to the parental control options in the settings menu in the dashboard and unlock the feature that allows him to play old xbox games on live.
