I just got an AWESOME BRAND-NEW $70 gaming mouse yesterday :P. ITS LOADED!!! Its a new logitech "G5" gaming mouse. One of the features is that the scroll wheel ACTUALLY tilts to the side! It can tilt right or left.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to customize the controls in HALO, it doesn't let me use those buttons! :(. I keep trying and its not working. I even tried messing with the software it came with, and it won't work! :(.

BTW I have these two thumb buttons on the mouse which pwn! I use them to switch weapons and reload :P. The mouse also has different "sensitivity settings" you can change into an "order". SO during the game I just press a button on my mouse and the sensitivity instantly changes! I use the "middle notch" which I fine tuned PERFECTLY for most weapons. Than I have a lower notch which I adjusted to its perfect for using the sniper rifle. Low sensitivity with the sniper rifle works awesome! And finally I have a hight notch for things like vehicles when I might need to turn the vehicle around quickly :P.

did it come with software?
try the manufactures website for an update or something.
it might just be if that doesnt work that halo isnt compatible with it....
hope this helps

That's cool.

On a side note here, I would like to say that a low sensitivity combined with a large mousepad can improve your aim tremendously--you won't have to pick up your mouse to aim, rather, you can simply move your mouse across the vast canvas and at a low aim sensitivity.

Yeah your right. I like a higher sensitivity though for most weapons, JUST NOT THE SNIPER!!!

My mouse uses the new laser technology instead of the old optical :P. It can work on ANY SURFACE!!!! I don't even need a mouse pad :D. It works PERFECTLY even on skin and my pant leg! :O

That's like when I paid around $130.00 for my GeForce 6600, and that was after a fifty-dollar discount!

Ugh, I got ripped off. Thanks, Comp USA!

First, don't tell me I "fail" just because you "think" I got ripped off. Thats just not cool jerk.

Second, the G5 mouse YOU are seeing is an older model. Mine is a BRAND NEW model that looks different and has more buttons.

i would go to http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679, they show how, laser is NOT better then optical. It shows alot of real information that uses scientific analysis instead of opinions. The mx500 is better then the mx518 when you overclock your usb ports. If you don't believe me look at the comparisons.

My G5 mouse is newer than the one they reviewed in there. My mouse goes up to 1,000hz instead of 500.

And actually my mouse just about pwns all others LOL. I'm not trying to say your wrong or anything, but my mouse goes up to 2,000 dpi (compared to 600dpi in a standard mouse) and it uses full speed USB.

Tell me the color of the mouse, number of buttons. serial number, etc. Oh and G5 suck for low sensitivty players, Optical > Laser because it has a much higher malfunction speed and acceleration limit then a laser mouse, so you can move it faster before it stops workign correctly, and it has a much higher limit of perfect movement. Also, when do you use 2000 dpi, unless you have a massive screen, thats like 1920x1200. Besides, if you have acceleration turned on in windows it will always mess up your aim. Try comparing a 800 dpi at 500 hertz to a 1200dpi at 125 hertz. The 800 dpi mouse is much better and moves much smoother, by ALOT.

And I doubt you've even USED a laser mouse >_>. Don't sit here and tell me my $70 mouse FAILS when I have used an optical mouse for the past 7 years and the laser is MUCH NICER THAN IT.

My mouse moves MUCH SMOOTHER than your "wonderful" optical mouse.

Its got a dark blue "pattern" on top and the whole mouse is has a "rubberish" feel to it so its really nice to grip and such. Its got 9 buttons. 2 Thumb buttons, 3 scroll wheel buttons (one presses in and you can tilt it left and right), two small buttons below the scroll wheel, and your normal left and right button on the top.

I believe I asked you guys to help me, not have you guys try to tell me my awesome mouse fails.

Ok, sorry I offended you and your "awesome mouse", but people have the right to opinions
Where did you buy it?
The smoothness of its movement is dependent on the report rate not the method it recieves them, optical or laser doesn't matter.
You should use mouse pads just to prevent wear and tear on the mouse, if you don't the mouse skates wear out faster.
Also as for a way to make the buttons work in game, the only way I can think of is changign what the buttons use when you play Halo, like changing them to emulate a key and then just set it that way.

Sorry its just that I get angry really easy :D. (especially when someone is dissing something of mine).

I bought it at Best Buy

I totally forgot I could make it emulate a key! They had that option in the software :P. I'm gonna do it like that! :P

Ok, it seems like its overpriced though still, but by the reviews it sounds much better. I love emulation stuff, like joy2key, for non-fps games on my controller. Oh, you could also find the windows value the side click on teh mouse gives and then find out its corresponding place on the keyboard and press that. Then you can try it out to see if it works.
Oh, you should see if you have windows acceleration on, if you do disable it, it messes up the amount of space needed to rotate. Like goign left might take 4 inches, while going right may take 5 inches. Also make sure you have the windows sensitivity at 6, the default 1:1 ratio, otherwise you skip pixels.
I overclocked my usb ports yesterday to 500 from 125, it makes my mouse move in fps like when I use smooth mouse in Tremulous. I am never going back to 125 hertz again.

Its teh new version, they fixed serveral skippign problems teh sensor has, added the buttons on the right side back, and improved the report rate to 1000 hz.

  • 05.13.2007 7:55 PM PDT

$70 is way too much for a mouse. The extra buttons and features sound cool, but that's not worth it.

Chances are Halo pc lacks the software to support the scroll wheel tilt, since it was made four years ago.

What do you mean by newer?

WHAT'S THIS NEWER VERSION I'M HEARING =(

I just bought a G5 last week!!!

edit - i play MUCH better with my standard optical dell mouse than this; makes me feel like my purchase was kind of a rip

Hmm that's odd. With my mx518 I can just click the mouse button and halo reports that grenade is set to "button 5", or melee to "button 4"

Anyway, you could just make the buttons do obscure things like num lock and have that key be used in halo. (like artillery said)

rofl lawl

the second edition G5 has the same amount of buttons as the 1st G5 but with the side buttons on one side, like the MX 518.

IMO the first edition looks better too, but i would still go with the MX 518. cause its about $20 cheaper than the G5 and only 4000 DPI less.

oh yeah laser cannot pick up on all surfaces, infact optical can pick up on more surfaces than laser.
