Subject: The return of the Bungie Community :)

I remember the old (at least old for me) days, before Halo 2 came out, when people regularly interacted with each other in a civilized manner, when ideas were exchanged freely, and when complaints and criticism of bungie didn't take up half of the forums. I was really impressed. I thought "now this is a community worth being a part of". But with the release of Halo 2, things changed. All of a sudden, you started to see a massive influx of many of the people you see now. The "faux pros", the "Halo 1>Halo 2", the immature members of the community who either bicker or treat the forums like an instant messenger. I got disheartened and started to think differently of the Halo community, because eventually these people drove the old ones out. I visited the site less and less, and eventually stopped playing Halo 2 online all together.
But now, finally, the old community has returned. I think the Halo 3 Beta forums is my favorite now, because reasonable people post there! It seems almost exactly like the old days (with the exception of a few members here and there), and now all of this rudeness and all of these bad attitudes are not being tolerated like they once were. In fact, they had become the norm. I can't tell you how glad I am that I now see people posting without being flamed on a consistent basis, being called a noob, having people tell them they suck, etc.
I am elated to see the bungie community of old return, and I look foward to becoming more involved with it in the future.

It's the same bunch of people. I don't think they're acting differently either. It's probably your perception that has changed, not the community.

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I would tend to agree with Captain K Mart to some extent. I don't honestly think members here have changed all that much from the release of Halo 2. However, saying that, i have noticed that quite recently there have been less major trouble-makers floating around. Possible explanations? One theory we have going is that the new warning system is doing its job well. The natural fear and attention the Disembodied Soul invokes works well when we're trying to put a point across. Another possibility is that the community at large (with notable exceptions) has grown to mature somewhat. The question is what will happen at the release of Halo 3? At this time we can only but speculate, but we have seen similar things happen to the community at game releases in the past so perhaps comparably, the community as it is currently really has grown to mature and develop for the better.

I think it's great that yourself, and hopefully others, have a renewed faith in the community and let us hope that this can continue in the future.

I do see some improvements in the public forums. I have noticed less spam than usual; however, I usually just hang out in the private groups.

The forums are nice right now, theres always the flaming and stupid people who just can't swallow their pride, but it's nice. Once Halo 3 comes out I fully expect the same result as Halo 2, insane amounts of spam and new members. During that time I will probably go back into hibernation, not say I have come out of it.

That's probably because the 10000 players selected for the early beta are "above average" and "active" as far as bungie.net reputation is concerned, and these are the people making up many of the posts in the forum.

Yeah I noticed less flaming and such in the Beta forum. Considering there is a more "mature" audience that post's there, but in other forums, (notably the H3 forum) there is still alot of active members who have some crude behavior. In time I believe there will be a noticeable shift back to "Ye Olde Bungie Forums." So keep your heads up.

That's what I did with Halo 2. So once the real hype gets rolling for Halo 3's final release, I'm heading to my little bomb shelter and hiding there for about se7en months until things simmer down.

I think some community members need to start an off-site "fan fourm" where more active and mature members of the community can go to chat about Halo and Bungie related things (other random things too). It just seems that there are so many people that post on these forums just occasionally and I rarely get to see a thread for more than a day (it usually floats off). I also think that a majority of these posters are just people who log in occasionally, make a few posts (usually immature/complaining), and log off. Does anyone else feel this way?

Sometimes I feel invisible in these threads. Maybe because this is such a huge community. I post mainly in the Flood and Halo 3 forums and have noticed that I hardly ever get any response to my posts. When I first started really interacting on these forums I got more responses but recently its like I am really invisible. I guess I've been spending too much time here.

Say something worthwhile. Use lots of caps and say -blam!- and -blam!- a lot. That'll get you some attention.

Yeehehahah, that's the spirit. The Flood acts as a sort of training ground for that sort of stuff.

Well thats why we have groups :)
Unfortunately however, I don't know of any good ones, with the type of members I like (that don't flame, etc., you know the deal). Any suggestions?

Music is power.

Meh. There's gonna be people who say rude stuff and make fools out of themselves in pretty much every public forum you see (not just online.) But, yeah, I guess that's what the groups are for. I don't know if setting an example for people really makes that much of a difference in this case (not to say that it definitely doesn't,) but it's kind of like being in a room full of talking people, only a few of whom are talking to you. You just have to pay a little more attention and filter out the negative stuff.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day,
