No, this isn't another rant about M$. A company is saying that it has created and successfully created workarounds for the Vista requirment on H2V and showdowrun and are going to market these softwear workarounds. A recent merger in the company has made this possible and imo if anybody is going to find a work around for xp users is going to probably be a group of trained programers. "On the heels of the merger also comes the announcement of Falling Leaf Systems’ intention to provide compatibility software to allow Windows XP users to play two upcoming, Windows Vista-only titles: Halo 2 and Shadowrun. These games are available for immediate preorder through the companies’ website. Orders will be fulfilled by Amazon.com, and those who purchase will receive a free copy of the compatibility software within a few months." This means all you xp loyalists can stop complaing about how unfair Microsoft is because people are working on the problem. http://www.prleap.com/pr/77567/

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

"Microsoft has, in typical Microsoft fashion, decided to launch their forced migration onslaught in full force with the release of two games that will only run on Windows Vista,” stated Thomason. “First they claim that it was impossible to implement DirectX 10 compatibility atop Windows XP, and now they also want us to believe that they couldn’t successfully launch two DirectX 9 based titles on XP either. We plan to expose both theories as patently false.”

WOW. Bring it!

Since nobody here has gotten ahold of the service this may or may not be an issue. Chances are that the service is directly integrated into the games as demonstrated by H2V screenies. If the service is integrated directly into the game then live will be cracked along with it. From the sounds of the article it looks like the software being developed exploits Vista code and may be able to emulate bits and pieces of Vista so the program will run. There are many workarounds to this and a person could pull off what xbox users without live have done and create an XBLconnect like server browser. This article just gives some hope to people unable or unwilling to upgrade and I belive it deserves some attention because nobody here has actualy had contact with the game's code.

Sorry, but it's not that simple. And besides, do you wanna spend another year or so reporting a port of an console game? No? Well who do you suppose would want to make Halo 2 for XP when there's a ton of time involved, and you're getting no money out of it. Oh, and I'd like to see you "emulate" an operating system. Christ, they're complicated enough. And that website (I'm talking about the actual developer's website), looks like it was made in an hour. I call BS on this load of crap.

Just suck it up and get Vista for christs sake. Or don't get it and and try to run it on a program that probably won't even work. Either way we have enough "Make Halo 2 Vista for XP" threads, so I'll thank you to take a clue and post this garbage on one of the already established threads kicking around on the first few pages.

I say people who try to do work arounds have no life, and alls it does is ruins the companies buisness and they just won't keep making their products if too many people hurt it.

OK, bottom line is that it was a PR release. Let's see what happens.

What I'm trying to accomplish is trying to get rid of these threads, I could personally care less if XP users got left behind in the dust if it wern't for a bunch of pissed off people too lazy to shell out a couple of hundred dollars or just download via Bit Torrent. Either way this was an official press release from the company involved. Also it is possible to emulate parts of an operating system for example Virtual PC for Mac and even Windows Compatibility Mode or the entire OS with programs such as VMWare Workstation. I'm not saying this is going to materialize into anything I'm just saying XP users need to either shut up or see what the future brings.

  • 05.16.2007 3:52 PM PDT

People just don't want Vista because they're to lazy to go out there and make money. If Halo 2 PC was on XP, I'd never get it.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Wow someone is wasting time, energy, brain power and some bandwidth with a question/rumor quelled by M$. Dx10 was developed from the ground up, it means backwards compatibility was thrown out the windows (pun intended), and imagine what XP was designed with in mind!!!!!! Good job!!!!!
You Fail!!

Someone needs to actually read up on what he is talking about. Both Shadowrun and H2V are DX9 titles, they have nothing to do with DX10, other then the fact that they are meant to run on Vista.

  • 05.16.2007 9:18 PM PDT

They'll try to do this, but MS will call up their lawyers and this "Falling Leaf Inc." or whatever will be dealing with Mr. Lawsuit. This will die off as another hairbrained scheme.

The easiest way to kill all Covenant.

1. Put a sign on a door that says. Forerunner Artifacts here.
2. Watch them pile in.
3. Blow it to pieces.
4. Repeat!

Both games actually use DirectX10, they just don't use Direct3D10!! For graphics H2V uses the DirectX9 graphics library, but for networking, sound and input H2V uses DirectX10.

Have you guys heard of a company called Transgaming? They have a program called Cedega which runs Windows games on Linux.

example: http://www.transgaming.com/images/transgaming/screenshots/ced ega60/bf_01.jpg

Falling Leaf is working on something like that, but basically they are working on running Vista exclusive games on XP.

Its possible, the question is whether Falling Leaf has the resources to actually pull this off. They already have some tech demos running some DX10 stuff in Windows XP on their website.

That's not what I meant dude. I knew that it's possible to emulate an OS. I've Windows 3.1 emulated on my other machine. What I meant to say was that I'd like to see these guys at falling leap succesfully: emulate bits and pieces of Vista. Don't you think that might be a tad difficult to do that? Yeah it's probably hard to emulate an entire OS, but what about only bits and pieces of it that invariably tie into so much more in the program?

Tell ya what, if these guys pull it off and I can play H2V on my current machine, then I'll mail you 20 bucks.

My God...just go buy Vista. Workarounds and emulators aren't the actual product, so there's going to be lots of glitches even Vista doesn't produce. Not to mention, M$ is a COMPANY. Let them make their money.

Considering Vista won't even INSTALL on my machine because nVidia is lame about their drivers for the 7000 series and beyond, A buggy version of H2 single player on XP is much better than staring at a black screen.
