While i do partially agree with you; i'd love to see the days of Marty The Elder as a regular forum personality return, but, due to the nature of the beast, its probably not going to happen. The fact is this community devours every thing said by anyone in a position of authority and tears their words to bits, letter by letter. Due to the fact all bungie employees are signitories of NDAs, there's just too much risk of something letting slip in general conversation, the general employees just can't do it. Then you have to remember that a big chunk of bungie's employees are on temp contracts, so simply do not have time to converse and get to know the community.
Aside from that, why would they want to? The majority of the community is a hive of scum and villainy. In LOTRO the devs/GMs have to converse with the general playerbase, as the game is an MMO, and player input is absolutely essential for balance issues. Halo, as an FPS, is nearly static and requires no such input. We do however, see some valiant efforts from the community team, and they should be commended for the amount of needless crap they've put up with in this halo 3/crackdown saga.
