Would it be possible to host an online multiplayer game in halo 2 vista by creating a LAN game and forwarding the appropriate ports on your router so the game is visible on the Internet, and then connecting via Direct IP?

I've done this before on Halo 1 when a friend and I wanted to play 1v1 but our CD keys were too umm... *ahem* similar... When you are in LAN mode it does not connect to the master server / LIVE (in the case of halo 2)

so, do you think its still possible to do this or have they coded in some protection system to prevent people from broadcastnig a LAN game over the Internet?

LAN games don't work over the net, so I'd to say no.

Well if you read my post you'd see that I have succesfully connected to a friend's LAN game using Direct IP. You just have to forward the proper ports on to the hosting machine. Trust me, it works with Halo PC.

Why would you do this? You can host multiplayer games with a Silver account, they just can't be dedicated servers. And since activation of any copy of Halo 2 Vista is linked to the copy of the game, you both *technically* could register the same copy and CD key under two different accounts and play together online, bu that's just a theory. I don't know if they have some kind of system to tell if two identical CD keys are playing on the same server, but I don't think they do since the CD key is linked to a game copy, and not a specific account. A much more copy protective and secure way would've been to register games like Steam does, where the key is permanently linked to your account so you can only register it once.

Also, I did read your post just fine, but I'm not sure I believe it. There's a difference in traffic it listens to when it's set to LAN/Internet.

It's possible. You can set up six computers in a basement running F.E.A.R., make them set up a LAN, and then watch as people join your game over the Internet.

There are programs that let you play LAN games over the net such as hamachi.

Well I didn't even need one of those, I just forwarded my ports, started up the game and told my friend my IP, and it worked.
