At first I was running an ATI Radeon X300/550, a card that is BELOW the requirements for Halo 2. It would always crash at different parts of the game, and return me to the desktop. I figured it was my card.

So tonight my friend brought over his video card, a GeForce 6600, a card that is ABOVE the requirements for Halo 2. Assuming this would fix the problem, I got the exact same error message.

So for the people who are having so many problems with this game, chances are it's not your system. I just read a post about a possible recall? So hopefully they will exchange our broken games for working ones. Congrats Hired Gun, or whatever?, you were unknown and now you will forever be known as the company that broke Halo.

Are you sure you have absolutely EVERY single piece of the ATI drivers uninstalled? (REGISTRY ENTRIES, FILES ETC.)

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

OT, but hey buddy. :)

Sorry to hear you're having problems with it.

Hey Aj. Yeah me too. I was looking forward to this game. I'm hoping I really do have a defective disc after reading about this possible recall.

The rumors about the defective discs are only installation issues. It sounds like there is something wrong with your system other than the graphics card.

Do you have all of the latest drivers for everything in your system? Double check sound drivers! It could even be an issue with another piece of hardware.

It can't be a driver issue, since I got the same error and never had an ATI/AMD vid card installed, my system is running on nvidia ever since.

E/: I got a X-FI Xtreme Music, what's your soundcard?

Maybe all those people experiencing this error should compare their systems.

Is it possible, that my Side Winder FF2 is causing it to crash? It's the only special hardware, which is running at the same time. Ah and I've got the Logitech g11.

The one who struggles against death is far stronger than the one who simply has no fear of it.

I got this one, I know what's wrong AnOffday, because the EXACT same thing happened to me. To fix do the following:
On Vista find where it says your Microsoft PC score, there should be a link somewhere on the message that keeps coming up on you.
Basically what you need to do is go to where it says the score, and click the link that makes Vista scan your computer's performance. I did this after I installed the exact same card as yours, and the drivers for it, my Graphics Card's score alone shot from like 1.6, to 5.8.
Now the problem will no longer crop up, and you can play H2V ^^

Anyone knows what the PC/game score for H2V is?? I got a 4.5 laptop and want to lnow how well it works...

Anything above 4 should work moderatly well, 3 bieng the bare bare minimum. and 5 bieng optimum.

Thanks for the tip, but it still didn't work for me. And what's the difference between graphics and gaming graphics? Because for gaming graphics I get a 3.2, but for just graphics I'm getting a pathetic 2.2? I don't get it?

Ok. Another question. I just read somewhere that Halo 2 does not use DirectX 10. And when I type the dxdiag in run it says I am running version 10. Could this be the problem?

Nope, thats normal.

Vista uses dx10, that's about it.

Sounds like you have one of the following problems:

Bad RAM
Bad Power Supply/not powerful enough Power Supply
Overheating CPU (which means bad CPU fan)
Motherboard with blown Transistor

You can run programs like memtest (to test memory), pcmark (for cpu stability), 3dmark (for directx/cpu stability), and some others out there as well, to test and see if your computer has any hardware problems. Memtest would directly tell you theres an error for your memory. PCMark/3DMark would probably just crash during benchmarking if there was a problem.

Random crashes usually means theres something wrong with the system. Its possible you aren't getting enough power to the CPU, and if that werethe case, the GeForce 6600 would probably make it worse since I think it takes more power. With all of the problems listed above your computer will perform okay 99% of the time, but you will get glitches like corrupted downloads for files that are very large (like 1GB+), and once in a while your PC will reset or crash (especially when strained).

Theres also a chance your Windows install is screwed and you need to reinstall it from scratch.

My system is 100% stable damn.

I ran through serveral 3d Mark 07 tests last week, to test out a new driver with xp.

Ah and by the way, Guild Wars doesn't detect any memory faults. My old pc had a broken RAM module once, none of the programs found the problem, but Guild Wars did. So....

I haven't had any problems until Halo 2. I doubt there's something wrong with my system.

- Note, that's split up so that it's allowed :)

I have an X300, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.73GHZ processor...I get a horrid frame rate most of the time, any where from 5-30, depending on the place...it usually favors the lower end, though.

Well there IS a problem with your PC or installation of Windows because Halo 2 Vista is working without crashing for a lot of other people including me. It won't hurt to run some tests.

I've had those problems before on my old PC. Usually you don't notice them unless you run some tests. They are almost invisible until you have one application that just doesn't do well with these types of errors.

I'm not saying its 100% sure its a hardware problem, but don't count it out either.

also anoffday, something is official until SOMEONE from the people who made it or distributer (aka hired gun or M$) say it is broken. just because you think it is doesn't make it official.

Here you will need this to help you get your foot out of the back of your throat, looks llike its in there pretty deep. And what is that on your face? Egg?! *hands Kim a washcloth*

Sounds like user error IMO. when you switched graphics cards did you remove all of the ATI drivers and then install the nvidia drivers?

Yeah. Because I'm sure they'd do that. They can't even give a date for the release of the game. Do you really expect them to say if something was wrong with the game?
