There is one way that is a promise to get you your custom resolution...
Locate your exe file (I don't have H2V yet so I don't know exactly what it is- Halo 1PC was of course Halo.exe) somewhere in your Program Files\Microsoft Games.
Right click on the file and choose- send to desktop, create shortcut.
Of course this is all unnecessary if you installed Halo 2 Vista on default install so this was created automatically. Right now I'm not logged onto Vista- using XP Pro but in XP there is a way to make it run in a custom resolution.
Right click on the Halo 2 Vista desktop icon and select properties.
On XP you'd find the location of the .exe file that was being targeted and then add "arguements."
For example "-window" immediately after the location would make the game run in windowed mode. For YOU something like this would work-
Example using Halo CE on XP:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\Haloce.exe" -vidmode 1176,664,60
The last number in the x,y,z is the REFRESH RATE. Make sure you're aware of your moniter's/tv's rate because damage can occur. I used 60 because that's what my moniter supports. You'll probably need to use something different.
You can add MULTIPLE arguements, in order such as:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\Haloce.exe" -vidmode 1176,664,60 -window
This would run the game in windowed mode and the resolution stated. If the resolution is NOT SUPPORTED by your video card then DirectX will fail to initialize... and sometimes it's not an aspect ratio thing so don't try guessing. Of course your Nvidia card obviously supports it so no worries here.
The last thing to do is to apply the settings and then try the game by the desktop icon way. I did this on XP with Halo 1 sometimes when recording in a wacky 512x384 resolution (in order for smooth videos)- one supported by my video card. It should work on Vista and you should be able to play H2V on your HDTV!!
