We all know religious discussion is not allowed. Although topics that have nothing to do with religion get locked because the topic is controversial in some religions. Take evolution threads, sex threads, and even end of the world threads can start (unfortunately) the banned topic discussion. It really annoys me when a smart or just funny thread gets locked because of this.

Should threads that incite religious discussion get locked or should the offenders that start the discussion warned or banned? I understand why threads like these get locked; they start flame wars. Political and religious topics start flame wars, but so do simple science topics and "do you think there is extra-terrestrial life?" topics. Should these kind of topics that will most likely incite banned discussion get locked?

So many things can start a banned discussion. Would it be more practical to just blacklist or warn the people that participate in the discussion and let the topic proceed or should the topic be locked before the flame war or banned discussion start or do you have another idea?

Ban the flamers, leave the thread alone.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I believe that this is a moderator judgment call -- no hard and fast rule will be either applicable or fair to all situations. I have seen the moderators make good calls both ways.

I don't think that religious/political discussions are at the top of the "problem" list right now, anyway *cough*Halo3Beta*cough*

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

It depends on the severity level with the moderator that stumbels upon your thread. He may ban if he felt that was the right action to take. He may lock the thread. He may let it go on for a while then lock it. Or he may just completely ignore it and let it live.

If a thread is deleted, then there is usually a good reason to do so.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Some topics no matter if you are trying to discuss the religious side of things or not will certainly drift that way. In the end it is a judgment call. If I feel it is going to get out of control or already is I will lock it. Then I would point members to The Black Chapter to continue the discussion. That way it can still be discussed without making a mess of the public forums.

Good advice. A lot of private groups allow for religious and political discussion.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

That choice is left up to the moderators - for good reason: this is often a judgment call, and a one size fits all policy is inappropriate and not effective.

Frequently, by the time they see the thread, it is too far gone and gets locked, and the people who derailed it get banned.

And besides, if you want to talk about stuff like that, talk about it in a group where there is no such restriction.
