Subject: The existing group search feature is poor

Why? Because it only allows you to search based on the very first word of the group. Would it really be that difficult to allow it to search by every word in the group? I don't know how people expect to appeal to the general public both with signatures being something that nobody even notices anymore (most members don't even know how to see somebody's signature), and with a poor searching feature. What's it going to take to get this changed?

If you want to be a part of one of the greatest and most active communities in the seventh column, come here. You will thank me later.

If you are looking for a particular group, I would expect you to at least have an idea of it's first word.

I'm not. I run a group, and I'd think unless the very first word was the exact purpose of the group, then you're never going to get anybody searching for you. If you just put "Custom" into the search field you come up with maybe 6 groups for custom games.. none of which are active now.

If they don't plan on changing it, it's at least a good idea to put up a disclaimer - but come on... it's like an extra 3 lines of code they could put in. They are either lazy or they don't care about it.

I think that the group search feature is there mainly to find groups that you already know about.

For example, you want to join a group called The Pwners (made up name), but you can't find the link to the group. Simply search for "The Pwners" and the feature will bring you straight to the group home-page.

If you are looking for a group of a certain purpose (perhaps, as you said, custom games), then you could always just take a look at The Classifieds. They are there for a reason. If you can't find what you are looking for, simply make a thread along the lines of "I am looking for a group about custom games," and there is a good chance that you will find someone very eager for you to join their group.

If Achronos and the Online Team want to give us a chance to turn groups around, they should give us something that helps us find groups better. I think a group should be able to tag their group with certain key words like "RPG" "Elites" "Star Wars." Things like that to help narrow search parameters. There should also be a change to the search only coming up with the first word.

The entire search feature is poor. It even asked me if I had any spare change!

It's good to at least have a search feature now. The shame is, no one actually uses it. I've seen more repeated threads over the past few days than I care to remember.

That's probably because it doesn't work all that well.

I wasnt aware the groups were in need of "turning around". The only thing affecting a group are its members. If members of a group choose to not participate, then it wasnt much of a group to begin with. The most active groups here are active because of thier members, not because they have a group name that can be easily accessed via search function.

Or the fact that it was easy to get your name out there back when signatures were something everyone could see easily or even knew how to see (a lot of people don't). With the new iteration of the website it's extremely difficult to get new members into your group unless you're constantly spamming the classifieds.

It's very difficult to get a group off the ground and rolling like you'd hope. With the current lack of exposure it's going to be terribly difficult to get new groups rolling, and this search feature is part of the reason. They should at least implement meta tags that you can assign for your group so if people search based on what the group is about, not what the first word of the group is. Like, if you wanted to find a group that plays Halo: CE customs on XBC, then you should be able to enter XBC or Halo1 or something like that to find them. For all we know, their name could be "The group that plays Halo CE customs on XBC", but you need to search under "the" to find them.

They may as well just get rid of it in it's current form, because right now it's next to useless.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I have always agreed with a "search groups by keyword" feature.

But lets face it -- Bungie has bigger things on its plate right now than implementing new features for groups. Perhaps once the Beta is over and the data has been sufficiently stored and organized, they can use some spare time to throw in some new group features. But considering that only 6% of all active members use the groups at all (and despite the fact that most of those are also bungie.net's MOST active users), it is not a very high priority for them (or us) right now.

Once Bungie finishes Halo 3, it would be nice to see a keyword group search.

That actually is on the list of things to do (tagging groups). Unfortunately, group development is currently taking a backseat to a bunch of really, really cool Halo 3 features. We will revisit it eventually.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully it's sooner than later because group activity should explode once Halo 3 comes out.

Yes, that's another point. You guys do all this work ensuring the site's hardware and software back end can handle the traffic, but what about the social back end? Hmm? What happens when you get millions of new members who think the only place to post is the forums? No matter how good the software is, the forums' social structures won't hold.
