I'm not an expert- but I've heard that cables are much much better than wireless. Computers/xboxes with cables normally have a smoother connection speed than ones with wireless. If I were you, I'd do stuff for them and then try to convince them to let you have a cable running through the house. I mean you could unplug it when you're not using xbox live. You can buy like 200 ft. of network cable for $40. So you could buy tools for making cables and then cut off the covering of the cable, re-arrange the wires so they are either a cross-over or a straight-through, im not sure which one is needed for xbox live.. and then put one of those plastic clips on the wire and crimp it. You can't have the same cable be more than 100ft. long. Well you could, but you'd need a repeater.

get the wireless-b router from walmart or office max, get the adapter for the x box and the adapter for the pci card and you'll have your own home net work and i haven't had a connection problem yet...

Don't go wireless trust me. Your xbox live expeirence will much more enjoyable if your xbox is hardwired to your modem. Espically if the moden is a good distance from your box. I suggest you get a long ethernet cable the type of cable is called "Cat 5" or "Category 5" and some cable nails at Home Depo and just run the cable neatly in the corners of the walls when the rents aren't home.Once they see what a nice job you have done and how much fun you are having playing Halo2 on xbox live they will have to let stay! Unless you a wireless modem can't ba hardwired... then your screwed.
