Subject: Why does Halo 2 have such poor performance for such an old game?

Woo

My system is fine barring the video card (5200 PCI, yes shut up I know it sucks) but it shouldn't be running at like...3 FPS...

Half Life 2, which came out around the same time (and looks a little better) runs well with 30-40 frames on medium settings at 1024X768. Halo 2 on Vista runs at 3 frames on LOW settings at 800X600.

Seriously.

Why?

try adding -novsync as a command argument

  • 05.24.2007 10:33 AM PDT

Woo

Did that. Seemed to make it worse and the sound stutters.

For future responses: I know the card is old and even crappy for its time, but 1 frame?

Because Vista consumes a lot of resources, and they upped the graphics a lot in H2V compared to the Xbox H2. A lot of other people are having performance issues with it btw. I don't know all of your specs, but getting 2GB makes life much easier for everything you do on your computer.

  • 05.24.2007 10:36 AM PDT

Woo

My other specs include:

2.8 P4
1256 RAM

Halflife 2 doesnt seem to have much of a drop on Vista though.

I've been saying the exact same thing. I can run Half Life 2, one of the most amazing looking games ever, perfectly, but my computer can't handle a port of a 2 and half year old game? I don't freakin get it either.

That's the thing. They say they upped the graphics, but it doesn't look any better. Some are saying it looks worse, and this is even coming from reviews of the game.

Graphics werent upped. The resolution was. Makes textures sharper, but also shows off the poor resolution of said textures.

Resolution's Ceiling was heightened. Most of the graphics were enhanced using the original materials. All of the textures are increased, the smoke, fire, bullets, characters..

Actually, its a Pentium D

Not sure what the difference is?

Pentium D was the first Dualcore. P4 is just single core.

Thought Pentium D's should be banned...

Ok... OP

1st off im in a similar boat.

2nd go to help and support, type in "windows score" in the search bar. Whats your computers overall ranking?

Halo 2 Vista requires a ranking of 3.0 its recommended comp ranking is 5.0.

ok the way the score works is it rates your computers componentes and then rates you by the lowest one. I have 2.6 in memory (1.5gig of ram) so i get an overall of 2.6 (rest of my comp is 3-5 range) (my motherboard can only handle 2.0gig so im in the market for 1 gig dimm. SOON)

In the meantime H2V runs slugish on low setting with no AA on, but only when multiple peeps are on the screen. im counting 15 or so for slow down. I am in 800by600 setting too. (my graphics card is an ati x1300 512meg card, it can handle more but Vista is a ram hog)

here this should help....

Windows Vista Premium Requirements:

Processor: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
System memory: 1 GB
Graphics processor: Windows Aero Capable, WDDM driver, Pixel Shader 2.0, 32 bits per pixel (Intel, ATI, NVIDIA, S3, Via)
Graphics memory: 128 MB
Hard drive space: 40 GB
Hard drive free space: 15 GB
Optical Drive: DVD-ROM

thats just to run Vista

now add this to that

here are the requirements for H2V:
OS: Windows Vista™
Processor: 2 Ghz Pentium 4 class processor (or x64)
RAM: 1 GB
Hard Drive: 7 GB
Video Card: DX9 graphics card: WDDM driver, PS 2.0/32BPP, At least nVidia 6000 or ATI x700 or above
Online Multi-player: Internet connection for Games for Windows – LIVE
Drive: DVD-ROM drive

ok now the way windows Vista works Memory wise is if the memory it wants is avaliable it takes it. So it wants 1 gig. and so does Halo 2. For best preformance you will want 2 gig in your box. That way each will get what they want and not have to share.

Only 20% of my ram is being used for Vista.

256 megs, rounded.

How on earth do you get it to use so little RAM?!?! Also, I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X300, 1GB RAM, 1.73GHZ Celeron Processor, and I can literally run F.E.A.R. on medium quality at 800x600 with a very good frame rate for 95% of the game. There's no reason why I should be getting a frame rate of anywhere from 1-20, usually the lower, with a 2.5 year old game. A lot of it is Vista, or at least some, but my video card is somewhat slow too, compared to others.

  • 05.24.2007 11:10 AM PDT

Woo

I don't know how so little ram is used, I think its TOO much for an OS.

And going back to the original point. This isn't about how poor my system parts are, I'm asking why a 3 year old game runs worse than that of a game that just came out.

  • 05.24.2007 11:12 AM PDT

I know, I have the same question...but I asked how you got it to use so little because Vista uses 40-50% of my 1GB of RAM just sitting there. And people thought the H1 port was bad...this has no lead (yay) but frame rates so bad it doesn't matter because you're dead because you can't move!

  • 05.24.2007 11:16 AM PDT

Woo

Heh, H1 runs great on my machine. And yes, I would call that a so-so port.

I'm surprised that a game that hasn't even been officially released (remember the recall, or, if that doesn't fancy you, 2 days old) is being considered "such an old game."

I wouldn't consider the performance of the game poor, but rather, the performance of the hardware is poor, in relative context to what's currently available.

Compared to H2V, I'd call it a great port...on the lowest settings H2V looks worse than the Xbox, and I still get sucky frame rates. Even when staring at a wall!

  • 05.24.2007 11:20 AM PDT

Woo

Its probably because H2V is a port of a November 2004 Xbox 1 game. ;) Thats why its "such an old game"

And define performance of the hardware. You mean poor optimization?

I'll even add Riddick to the list. That Xbox game looks much better than Halo 2 on the xbox and I can still run it 800x600 on medium settings on my pc!

To be quite honest, your pci card is holding you back for the most part.
To comment on someone saying that Vista takes what it needs for memory, you also have to remember that it also releases said memory when its needed for full screen games or other 3d applications It shuts down aero and dreamscene on its own. Besides whats the point of having memory if its just sitting there not even being used? I dont know about you but when i spent good money on something i want it to be used not just sitting there collecting dust.

  • 05.24.2007 11:28 AM PDT

Woo

My hardware is not my concern though.

I'll ask again.

Why can Riddick and Half-life 2 run fine and Halo 2 can't with my current setup.

Explain that and you will be answering my original question.

Here you will need this to help you get your foot out of the back of your throat, looks llike its in there pretty deep. And what is that on your face? Egg?! *hands Kim a washcloth*

You are playing with a video card well under the minimum requirements, what did you expect?
