Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity
So I bought the game from Circuit City early this week and I have been playing it the past couple of days. I have found my share of problems that clearly show this thing was not ready for prime time and thus the delay until May 31st... or until further notice. Anyhow, I wanted to compile a few things and fixes I have found that can be quite useful. Hopefuly these issues won't be after the official release hits the streets, assuming they fix them between now and May 31st or whenever.
- DO NOT USE TRAY & PLAY feature. Folks have been getting mixed experiences with it. A few were able to play without a problem, others report crashes/freezes/weirdness. I personally experienced that the game installed but without audio. Try the ol'skool INSTALL AND DON'T PLAY option instead. After it is done installing you can play the game properly.
- When you create your Live account or import one if you are already an XBL subscriber, the game will prompt you for an update. Again, a few people have reported problems with this update. The main Halo 2 for PC webpage has the update for download if you have problems doing it through live. This "update is actually the installation of the Live services I believe. There was also another update/patch for the game itself but it is not the same as the one mentioned here.
- There is a potential issue with the Single Player Campaign. After you finish the Quarantine Zone level, the game will prompt you to insert the orginal Halo 2 disc into the tray... even when the disc is still inside. If you hit A, your saved game will be corrupted. If you try re-loading said saved game, it will tell you that the data doesn't match live, so you can either continue without achievements or restart the level. DO NOT SELECT EITHER.
I'd suggest cancel everything (I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del) and re-launch the game, This time choose to start a new game by selecting a level. It will prompt you that your saved game will be lost. That's OK. In the list of available levels, you will see the Gravemind level available (next after the Quarantine Zone in the story mode). Select it and the story/game will continue as usual. Again, your mileage may vary and a few folk have reported this issue, for others it was not a problem at all and they were able to play the game without this bump. Guess in what camp I was "stuck"...
- There is no known way to set up custom video resolutions. The game comes with a predetermined set of resolutions and they may/may not suit your needs. There was mention that the option -vidmode could work, but sadly it does not.
ll update if I find more and feel free to post new ones... and please keep it from becoming a trollin' bonanza. There are enough posts already to do that...
